Hi everyone!

My one little girl, Sweet Pea, is at it again...she has done so well all winter but now she seems to have an ear infection??

I noticed the other night that her one ear was puffy...I didn't mess with it and thought I'd see how it looked the following day...following day her eye was started to look a little puffy so I held her and washed her eye good and then went to her ear...she had a large crusty over her ear at this point so I washed that gently with warm water until I could get the crusty off and once that came off quite a bit of "white goo" came out....I squeezed gently to make sure I got all I could out of there....made sure she ate and had water ( i use vitamins in their water)....

Next day..eyes all nice and clear...I did wash her ear out again and then checked her other ear which also had gotten a crusty on it...I went ahead and did the same for this ear and also got some "white goo" out of that one..not as much as her other one tho. I did put some antibiotic ointment on both ears and rubbed that in gently...

Last night I checked both over and not wanting to "over do it" I left them alone last night based on I didn't see any swelling, etc...

She does seem to have like she was breathing thru just one nostril and the other nostril kind of "whistles" like its plugged...I washed it off and she was good to go and then it was doing that again last night.

Did I do the right thing here???? I cannot find terymycin (sp?) ointment anywhere in town here so I am going to order that online...noone else in our bunch has any kind of symptoms what so ever ...

Any suggestions and advice is much appreciated!! She is eating, drinking, everything else is normal.

Thank you!!
Jen

o my poor girl...i cant help you...

BUT it shows that i need more sleep i thought you were talking about your daughter ...i had to read it 2X

You can use regular antibiotic ointment that you use for cuts for her.. She could do with 1 baby aspirin to reduce swelling.
May need to give a shot for infection or put antibiotics in her water....

When dealing with the ear...I just rubbed antibiotic ointment right on it...I didn't go inside the ear...would you suggest taking part of a qtip and actually trying to get some into her ear at all? I didn't think actually digging into her ear would be a good idea....

antibiotics in the water...how long till we can sell the eggs again if we do that? or should I have her separated and just have her on them...

I have no problem giving a shot...where do I find out what area to give the shot in and where do I get the meds?

I use L.A. 200 which is broad spectrum antibiotic... One shot is good for 5 days.. Use 18 or 20 gauge needles 1/2 inch... to give 1 cc. flip her over and give injection right along the breast bone. Inject it under the skin not into the meat... you do not want to hit a blood vessel...
I think injections work quicker and I always keep them on hand for my birds. I got mine at Big R which is like Tractor Supply. Some people use Tylan injectable also...
If you use antibiotics in her water just mix up a strong solution and syringe it into her mouth a few times a day to get it into her system...
Not good to dose the whole flock unless they are showing symptoms also..
No I would not eat her eggs for a few weeks...

The ear infection must be deep inside and her tubes are plugged to her throat... Like a child with ear infection! You can use q-tip and wipe out excess just don't go in too far....
Hope Sweet Pea makes a full recovery... keep us posted....
