Lavender guineas 5 weeks tomorrow. I introduced the pearl grey keets to the adults at 7 weeks, so these guys have a bit to go.

One of the GLWs is *really* golden. I think it's a roo, but that's fine. A coon ate our one GLW roo, so we need a replacement.

Buff Orpingtons, Jersey Giants, and mutts 7 weeks. The Jerseys were from shipped eggs, so I'm glad to have gotten some roos.

More Jersey Giants, these are 10 weeks. Bought pullets. I love these guys, pretty docile even though I didn't handle them that much. I didn't handle the hatched ones really at all, and they're pretty chill too.

Pekins, 11 weeks. Loud and dumb. They reached full size at 8 weeks and they're enormous. A great alternative to chicken meatbirds, if you like duck. Not that these girls are getting ate.

Rouens and a Pekin cross 9 weeks.
Much quieter and calmer. Hard to see here, but the cross has dark green coloring on it's head and neck, some white on it's chest and wings, and bluish iridescence on it's wings like the Rouens. It's a bit bigger than the others. I think only one of the Rouens is a drake, but I have no idea on the cross.
They are beautiful!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Had chickens when I was a kid, then as an adult I inherited my girlfriend's chickens. A once larger flock that has, over the years, diminished to just 2 original hens.

(2) How many poultry beasts do you have right now and what breeds?

The 2 original hens are a Buff Orpington and Rhode Island Red, they were joined by a GLW rooster maybe year and a half ago.

To bolster the flock, we got GLWs and Barred Rocks (8 of each still around), along with some ducks (Pekins and Rouens) of which 2 Pekin and 1 Rouen drake, and 1 Rouen lady duck survived.

Then we got Jersey Giant chicks, Silkie chicks, a couple BO chicks, more Pekin ducklings... and hatched ducklings, chicks (own and shipped, guinea keets (own and shipped)...

So the tally now...
1 Rhode Island Red
1 Golden Laced Wyandotte rooster
3 Buff Orpingtons (1 adult, 2 at 2 weeks)
10 Jersey Giants (4 at 5 weeks, 6 at 3 weeks)
11 GLWs (8 adult, 3 hatched yesterday)
2 GLWxBR mutts (3 weeks)
1 GLWxBO mutt (3 weeks)
9 Silkies (2 weeks)

2 Pekin drakes (adult)
4 Pekin ladies (6 weeks)
1 Rouen drake (adult)
1 Rouen lady (adult)
4 Rouen ducklings (4 weeks)
1 Rouen x Pekin (4 weeks)

3 Pearl Guineas (2 male, 1 hen)
6 pearl keets (4 weeks)

And currently 5 days left on incubating lavender guineas (7 still going strong) and 8 more of our own chicken eggs.

Hoping one of the Silkies, Jerseys, and/or GLWs are roos. Our one guy has more ladies than he can manage!

(3) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I could watch the chicks' antics for hours. I love the suspense of hatching. I like our ineffectively aggressive roo. And the big ladies are funny too.

(4) What are some of your other hobbies?

I play Walking Dead: No Man's Land and sink the rest of my free time into other farm chores. I enjoy building things for the animals.

(5) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I install insulation, or I did before Covid. I haven't actually worked in a few months out of an abundance of caution.

(6) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

I got two Nuture Right 360 incubators that had different version numbers, and I was curious what the differences were. BYC was the only place I saw discussion of that. Never heard of BYC before that, and joined shortly thereafter.

Welcome to BackYardChickens! So glad to have you here in our wonderful community of friendly, helpful, knowledgeable people!
