Rats have obvious outer genitalia; if it has furry testicles you are looking at a male and if it doesn't you have a female (unless the rat is fixed). This method works best with rats that are five weeks old or more.

I'll just say if you look at their back end, if they are male it is pretty obvious.

Yup, intact males look like they're dragging around some marbles behind them...

It's kind of gross... But then male rats tend to be more docile than females, so I chose a male.
