Hi,

One of my 14 hens started laying on Friday. The egg was olive green, with a double yolk. I am curious about typical early laying patterns - ie - how quickly do chickens 'ramp up' to full production? The hen was either an Ameraucana or a Whiting True Green.

Many thanks!

Of my newbies only one started laying been one a day for the last 8 days. Small ones she’s a Red Star who will lay large eggs once she matured more. My Ameraucana or EE is showing signs she’s getting ready. It depends on the breed. Prolific layers like leghorns and red stars lay for me once a day then take a day off every 8-9 days. I’m just using mine for example. There’s tons of information about hens by breed. Ovulation is a little wacky when they start but I guess to answer your question by 6 months you should see a regular pattern of laying. Congratulations not only on your first beautiful green egg but a double yolker to boot!!!

Welcome to BYC!!

Depends on what that birds 'normal' will be....only time will tell.
It can take up to a month or so for things to smooth out to that 'normal'.
Some lay 6-7 per week, others 3-4, and anything in between.
..and it can change week to week throughout the year.

If egg was olive, bird is not a Ameraucana, they only lay blue.
Might be an easter egger(hatcheries call them Ameraucana).

Here's how to tell....

FYI.....semantics, maybe, but can be important communication terms when discussing chicken behavior.
Female chickens are called pullets until one year of age, then they are called hens.
Male chickens are called cockerels until one year of age, then they are called cocks(or cockbirds or roosters).
Age in weeks or months is always a good thing to note.

Thanks, everyone. My pullets are 122 days old today. The green egg in the photo came from one of them - an Easter Egger or a Whiting True Green (I suppose it could have come from either breed?) at 119 days (17 weeks). I am still awaiting a second egg.

Here is a picture of the first egg, and its contents.

... and today came another. The double yolk must have been for Friday and Saturday:) Here they are - the empty shell of the first egg, and the second.
