Early February 2016 Hatch - Who's In?

I had a chick that kinda pipped externally this morning. I was so excited but then on a closer look the pip didn't create a true hole in the shell, just a partial eruption, if that makes sense.

Did the chick die trying to external pip? Or is that normal to half-pip and then continue at a later time?

OH MY Goodness!!!! That is called a pip! Congrats! It is common for them to finally breakthrough and take a 24 hour nap. They can hit at the shell for over 1000 times (so it is said) so if you can imagine how tired they are after that!

Does it look like this?

Yes, it looks like that! Yahoo! I saw lots of pics of other people eggs in bators with a real hole in the shell, so I was worried.

Thank you so much for replying to me ambe0487!! I'm relieved. (For now at least

I've had that same exact freak out! I thought the egg broke itself once and not caused by the chick inside! HA HA. It is something that can be so exciting and yet a very long process as well. They come in their own time and it can be very hard to let them do it by themselves.

Ok, step back from your bator...;-]

You are totally seduced by activity, and hoped for activity.

Please don't take offense, but did you have anything to do with the inception of that chick, or do you think you will have anything to do with its birth...best answer, NO.

I have a live chick I had to pull out of its shell on Day 24...so, can I try to emphasize patience?

Just finished the final candle (day 16) with my GD. She was pretty excited to see some of them moving. Tossed out one more Cochin egg that was clear (obviously and did I say extremely obviously clear)- not sure why I didn't catch that one last week. There is one more cochin that doesn't look quite right or as full as the others - no blood ring or smell - so I am leaving that one and marked it on my notes. Final count before lockdown on Monday:

woohoo! First pip of the hatch-a-long! Congrats! Keep us posted! Are you glued to the incubator window?!?

I am on day 18 for my first set of this hatch-a-long. I candled my six (all from my own flock) and five looked perfect. One didn't seem to take up the whole shell like the others but it was active and so it also went into lockdown (it's the same age as the other five). I transferred the 6 to my Janoel-10 for lockdown (they were in my Brinsea but I have 18 MPC eggs in there still that are 10 days behind and only on day 8).

YAY!! That is great! I find that depending on the time of day and sometimes the location of the air cell versus light can make it hard to see what is going on in there. I find that I don't look too much into the details of what's going on in the egg, but only if there is growth. I've heard people say that if it looks like a bright lamp shade with the light behind then it isn't viable in the later stages.
