Early molting = bad winter?

Nah, it’s perfectly normal. Remember they don’t moult in their first year, so you have a year to prepare. They like to lull you into a false sense of security.
It’s really not too bad although the feather in the coop thing is a real pain the ass. I guess it depends on the layout of your coop though. I used to have a hen that would moult at the front end one year and the rear end the next. Result … she always looked like she’d been dragged through a fence backwards.
RIP Dylis.

My Connecticut hens will be 4yrs in the spring and they molt in the fall. They get all beautified with nice new feathers to help keep them warm through winter 😍🐓❤️ My hens lose their tail feathers and become very self conscious and shy! Its cute and when they get new feathers boy do they look great!! Rosie finally got her tail feathers and is back to being a huge pain in the butt! Pretail feather pic!

Just have to say, your coop is beautiful!

Both my Buffs are now molting for a solid 4 weeks. Stopped laying eggs. No change in feed. Have 20’ x 40’ garden with 50% shade netting at 7 feet high.
Have had 2 hurricanes. Weather just starting to cool off. They like to come in around 5 pm. Bed down for the night at 7pm till 5 am. The like to huddle together. Sleep on fresh timothy hay. Fresh water 24/7. Feeder cleaned and filled daily.
Wondering when the girls will start laying eggs again. Their molting is almost done. New feathers coming in.
Live in Osteen Florida. Central Florida.
