Early this spring my Barred Rock Rooster (Christopher Bawkin) chased off a hawk attack. I didn't see the confrontation tho.
I saw the hawk dive down behind the shed where the roo and a few of the ladies were scratching. Loud squacking , a stampeed (sp?) of 10 or 12 hens rushing to get under the coop. As I got to the back of the shed, the hawk flew up and away, 'ol Christopher Bawkins was all puffed out strutting around in a big circle making a big a ruckus.
The only clue I had that there was a hawk out, was I noticed a few hens on the other side of the yard taking cover underneath a srcubby bush they never really cared bout.
I'm glad my roo did his job, it's the only reason he hasn't gone to the stew pot.
He got a bit of cottage cheese for his courageous stand.
I've seen bald eagles here in Everett! Didn't think they came up here but one was perched in our broken tree.... Well, it was HUGE! Left the chickens alone.
I had a hawk though that tried to eat a broody's chick. They ran but the chick couldn't keep up, so she turned and chaced the sucker away all puffed out and meaning business. She did this twice and tried to flog the bird in flight. Bird didn't think it was an easy meal anymore and she walked away ticked and unscathed. No hawk problem since.
