hi there. I have a 10 month old frizzle cockerel who has got a whole lot of earwax in and around his ears. He has had this ever since he was little and it goes away after a few days and cones back again after a week. I was wondering if there is anything I can do for it. It seems to be annoying to him because he scratches them and stretches his mouth out. I take him to shows and I had asked people there what they thought the cause was. Many people said that mites could have gone into his ears. However I do dust him weekly and because he is a show bird he gets washed and is always very clean. I have come to the conclusion that he might just be an over producer of ear wax or he has allergies. Any thoughts on what I can do??

Thank you

In addition I forgot to mention that sometimes if he has it before shows I wipe the outside gently with a cloth and warm water which gets rid of it.

Can you post some photos?
You dust him weekly, what are you using?

You mention that he scratches the ears and stretches his mouth out - have you looked inside his beak really well to see if there's mucous, plaques, canker or sores?

I agree, "earwax" that keeps coming back sounds like infection. It could be ear mites too.
If you have vet care, that is best.

Sorry for the late reply. He doesn’t seem to have anything in his mouth. I use pestene to dust my birds. I will post some photos of his ears. Thanks for the reply’s

This is what the outside of the ear looks like. It is going away a bit now because I washed the outside the other day. The inside is still a little full. I had a feeling he may have had an infection. We don’t have any vets around here who know anything about poultry. What should I treat it with?

His face does seem to be a little bit swollen as well

In the post it mention a little black spot in the “earwax” that was a mites poop. I did see a tiny black dot in his ear. How would he be getting mites?? Is the dust I am using not working??
Could be the dust isn't reaching deeply enough inside his ear to kill the mites. I'd try treating him with the method describe in this thread that dawg53 linked
