Earwigs in the nest box....blech!

I used to be grossed out by the pincers on earwigs as well. Until I learned that they eat baby slugs and snails, that is. After that, they moved up the social bug ladder. The nest box is not the best place for them though, I agree!

Try putting down a damp rolled up newspaper either to the side in the nest boxes or as close by as you can get it at night. They like to settle down in damp, dark places. In the morning just take them over to your girls and shake them out. You may not be able to get rid of all of them, but at least you should be able to get them down to a more reasonable level.

Good luck!

I had that problem years ago, when i first started with Chicks.

I painted there next box, bright white, with bathroom paint, because it has a mold inhibitor in it.

and sealed up all round edges of the next box with caulk First, since they like to go in the cracks when its light out.

between sealing up the cracks along the edge of wood pieces and painting the nest bright white, they never came back.

Hmm... I did not know they ate slugs... no wonder I don;t have any on my plants

I have plenty of earwigs. I think maybe if they had a different name, they might not seem so bad... I start thinking about bugs and ears and ICK!!!

Is there anything safe to spray.? We are new to chicks this year and have found a bunch in the small opening near the door and they are there for a few days and then nothing and then they are back.. I really would love to get rid of them once and fall all...
thanks

Hmmm, I am totally over run with snails and slugs, maybe I should try raising earwigs????? Even though I find them totally disgusting I don't usually kill them when they pop out of their hidey-holes.

My chickens eat earwigs like candy! My wife wanted to dust for them. I said no! Chickens love bugs! Why use chemicals to get rid of a part of their natural diet?
