Easiest, Most Humane Method to Cull (Euthanize)

This is a tough topic, and usually winds up in an arguement...the threads usually wind up being closed or deleted by moderators. Also the reason your getting so many hits is there are two definitions to culling - weeding out a flock (rehoming, removing from breeding pens or potentials) and dispatching (put down).

I agree. Its the best way in terms of quickness thats it over, and you can make it so theres little to no stress leading up to that moment for them, they feel no pain and its over in a second.

I bought me a pair of the gardening pruning shears (small one handed type) they are good and sharp and easy to use just for this on bigger growing out youngin's and adults. I hate doing it, but its the best for them, but not me.

if a chick, thats always the hardest on the heart in my opinion. if your squeamish or faint of heart - wrap their body up in a old rag or a paper towel, have you a bag ready (or trash can) and do the deed over the bag/can, position your scissors on the neck and quickly and surely snip. place the chicks body in the bag, and tie the bag up. bury the remains or discard of them in the trash - depending on your choice/level of attachment. This way you eliminate some of the sight on your part.

Cervical dislocation is just severing the cervical spine (neck). You can use an ax, sharp shears, or do it manually (I am too squeamish to use my hands). How old is your chicken?

Edited to say: I mistook you for the OP. Your way is also considered cervical dislocation.

I guess I'll need to know for all ages. I have 5 Seramas, and 7 SLW, but am wanting to get some BLRW and some Marans as well at some point.

cervical dislocation - it works on any size chicken. the larger the chicken the larger an implement/tool your going to need. a large standard chicken a hatchet is probably going to be best to do cervical dislocation, but that will probably take two people for those who aren't 'used' to having to do it.

scissors and one handed pruning shears work best on chicks and bantams or young standards.

Much thanks! I am an RN and work in L&D so I see LOTS of blood and stuff like that, but just can't stand to purposely kill anything. Heck, I feel guilty enough if anything dies under my care!

People please, don't be nasty. I don't want this to be deleted or frozen. I will need it for future reference I am sure. No matter the why of it, it has to be done at some point for some reason, even if only to put dinner on one's table.

You are absolutely correct.

The OP should know that culling does not always mean "killing" but "removing" from the flock. I understood what he/she meant in this case but I could have pointed that out.
This topic often stirs things up here. I've learned not to debate it. I give my opinion as requested and respect the right of others to give theirs.

The OP has to decide what they want to do.

I think I am mellowing with age.

LOL I just always figure its not worth the effort. Speaking my stubborn opinion got me into a lot of trouble as a teenager, so I try to keep my mouth shut. its much easier on the computer, i can type it all out and then hit delete or use the backspace button. I thank god everyday for the backspace

Nah, not worth the effort I agree. I finally learned that it's easier to just keep my opinion to myself after typing things out a million times and then hitting back or delete. Someone else always ends up saying what I wanted to say anyway and it leaves me out of the drama.

I know I'm new here, but truly do NOT like drama, so I hope we have none.

My mouth still gets me into trouble. Restraint is a new concept for me......I'm still working on it.

LOL, I'm not too good at it myself. Much better online because by the time I get something typed out, my brain has had a second to go NO DON'T DO IT! In person, unfortunately what thoughts come into my head tend to slide right on out of my mouth, and even if they don't I think I must have a marquis on my forehead that annouces what I'm thinking!

I agree I hope not either, but I've seen it happen many many times in these threads...

Honestly hun its only a matter of time - lol.

It comes from those who take the quick (if sometimes messy) approach, and those who don't have the heart and stomach to do it the quick old fashioned way, and use the freezer or gas chamber techniques. - while they get the job done its just not my opinion thats its humane, and its without a doubt - not fast. But for some people its the only way they can do it, so

Ahhh, I see. I know on each site there are certain threads that ALWAYS go down the tubes. I am on a barrel racing site, and it always gets nasty when anyone brings up horse slaughter.

I want to do what's most humane for the bird, and easist on me, but what's easiest on me is secondary to what's best for the bird. So even if this gets canned, I have the answer I need.
