Typically EEs aren’t mommy-material but Maya has been collecting EVERYONE’S eggs and tucking them close. I recently ... ahem ... dispatched our EE roo (mean ol fart) and this behavior started. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Have any of you had an EE successfully brood a clutch? She typically gets “over it” after a few hours like- welp, that’s enough of that nonsense - and she’s out of the coop again.

The oldest hen I ever had was an EE till a mink wiped out her whole flock.
She was one of my most reliable and successful broodies. It is an individual thing.

Many EE brood and successfully raise chicks - it all depends upon their DNA.

None of mine have ever shown any interest in hatching eggs but this started right after Rhett literally attacked my face/head for the last time. I’m not sure if it’s related.

I would LOVE to have a broody hen. I’d like to not need an incubator but I’ve never had a hen that wanted to be a mama lol! I bought orpingtons in the hopes that one might next spring (they are only 4-5 months old and not laying yet) and have never had an EE show the slightest interest. I’d be so happy if she did. She is one of my sweetest hens.

I had 2 orpingtons. One went broody often, the other never did. As I said, it is an individual thing. Though some breeds tend to do so more often. I've even had leghorns go broody often, both white and black.
I usually get a few Penedesencas go broody every year. At least 2 a year.
If I wanted a reliable broody, I'd get a few cochins.

Right now my EE is the only one laying and we have fake eggs in the nesting boxes. She takes the fakes egg and her 1 egg and sits on them. 🤦‍♀️ one day I found her only sitting on fake eggs. The fake eggs are plastic golf balls.

She took the 2 ceramic and her own and sat on them for several hours but is finished again. 🤷🏽‍♀️
