Easter Egger club!

I just adopted a rescue hen who is my second EE.

My first one, Olga has always been my favorite hen. She is so sweet and let's be honest: finding a blue egg in the nesting box is like Christmas morning.

But our new hen, Lucille, is really winning my heart. She's a lap chicken (LOVE that!) and when my alpha-hen starts chasing her, Lucille hides behind me, because she knows I will protect her. It's precious.

Lucille lived the last 4-5 years in a cage without other chickens, and hadn't ever eaten anything but laying mash, so she was skeptical of new foods. But Sunday she watched the flock eating some frozen watermelon & when they walked away, she ran over to try it! I was so proud -- I had to capture the moment:

She was traumatized by the big change, and has stopped laying, so I haven't seen an egg yet. Waiting as impatiently as a kid before Christmas!!! :)

I LOVE my EEs!!! :)

Awww!!!! I had an OEGB who we rescued from an almost identical situation as Lucille! She was such a sweet, sweet chicken. And she adapted fairly quickly. We had a broody mama with 6 chicks at the time, so she followed them around and learned to free range. It was so awesome.

It really is amazing to see them learn new things. Wednesday she learned to try raisins. Her life keeps getting better & better! :)

My Ladies

I know it's been a while since I've posted any images of my flock, but I never think to take a camera with me when I go down to the Lower 40 to tend to them. Also I don't always have the time to just sit and wait for them to cooperate.

Oh my gosh! My sweet little rescue h3n, who has been with us just barely over a week, Lucille, had such a great day! I came home & she was free-ranging WITH the rest of the flock!

Last night, the girls wouldn't let her in her own coop. Tonight when I went outside to lock up, she was in her coop, roosting & sleeping side-by-side with Olga, my other EE hen. Love, love, love!!!

My chicks are getting so big. They are free ranging now but still so friendly.
Too friendly actually as my Rooster Heinlein and pullet Leia both like to picked up and petted and thanks to that I have for first time ever a case of Poison Oak.
I love the color variety in mine. I also have some that seem to favor their Araucana ancestors at least with the shape of their tails. Wondering if I breed my rooster Tolkien and my pullet Honor if the trait will be passed on.
