Egg color genetics are not exactly "black and white". If you have an olive rooster and cross it with a blue egg layer, you could end up with hens that lay blue, green or olive eggs. If the rooster passed the dark brown gene to a blue egg layer you'd get an olive hen.

Thank you for the info. There seems to be a lot to learn about these color genetics. I have several teenagers right now that are French copper/easter egger, so I'm figureing they will have olive/green eggs. I love that idea, more color to the egg basket. I guess with some you just never know what you will get. I like the surprise element there. So when I eventually cross Ralphie ( my feather-legged cross) with the other girls will their offspring get the feathered legs and feet. I thought I read somewhere that feathered feet and legs was a dominate gene.

Got my first two Easter Eggers on Friday along with a couple of marans. The farm indicated they were araucanas but they obviously are not so I imagine they are Easter Eggers. One is all white/yellow and is the fluffiest of my 4 chicks. My other EE is a a brown/tan color. It will be interesting to see how they look/change as they get older. I'll be taking weekly pics of them to show how much they grow and change in appearance each week. I'm trying to take as many pics as I can during their first week since that is when they are the cutest.

This is Ali and my other EE's name is Ari. She stayed surprisingly still for this photo shoot. It's hard to get the others to stay still for very long but it won't stop me from trying.

Has anyone crossed a blue wheaten(?) EE roo with a double blue laced barnevelder? I am hoping they produce blue laced red OE offspring. My roo is still very young, so I have to wait til t least the spring before I will be able to experiment with this myself. If anyone knows, or has crossed similar, I would loooove to know.

Our new Easter Egger chicks!!







My husband and I absolutely love our two older ones... And our 1 EE hen that is laying is more reliable than our RIRs! They are so much fun to watch grow and see the variety of colors. Probably all we will be adding to our flock from now on.

Wow, those are some REALLY good chick pictures. I would make a complete mess of things if I tried to set up a cute photo shoot and get them to hold still!!! Kudos to all of you who are able to do it!

Oh it ain't easy, trust me. I'm afraid they are going to jump off the table and hurt themselves every time. They don't stay still for long. The Easter Eggers are much better than my black copper marans.
