Easter Egger club!

Hatchery usually breed all their hens with white leghorns to increase egg productivity. i'm guessing that's why the eggs are bluer. if they crossed them with a brown layer you would get green eggs.

I have one hen that is red and lavender, she has mostly yellow legs, and by her body shape, I think she is at least 1/4 leghorn.

first egg! She's 30 weeks old and chose a stormy day. It's much more blue than I expected, and large. It's pictured here next to one from my White Rock, who has been laying for over a month.

Congrats! Very pretty.

So a new layer does not always lay smaller eggs? I have been trying to figure out who my third layer is....it is between a new layer or an older hen who stopped laying during molt. I don't know how old she is.....but I call her the grandmother of the flock.

I think they usually lay their smallest eggs at the beginning. My girl's eggs will probably get bigger with time. It just happens that she lays big ones!

The feed store I stopped at today had chicks! I got three adorable EE's! My 3 year old daughter named them Anna, Elsa, and Cocoa.... They are all spunky and adorable, but tonight Elsa just kept chirping (loudly!) and cruising around the brooder while the others were sleeping. I checked on her and all seemed fine but she wouldn't stop chirping. I picked her up and she snuggled down and fell asleep in my palm. I have never heard of such a thing..... I guess she will now be officially "princess" Elsa...

Anna

Anna again

Cocoa... check out those cheeks!
now...Princess Elsa
