Easter Egger club!

Well I found out how to scare the crap out of my 2 yr old EE Fester. My avi pic, the boss of my first coop and brave feller with most things until now. I pulled weeds yesterday and placed the grass and dandelions in my bushel basket, yes I am behind on weeding. Carry it to Stumpys run and Fester freaked completely out seeing the basket! I did not swing it or do anything threatening with it. I slowly walked in Stumpys run, set it down emptied half and off he went totally crazy freaked out rooster that got his girls panicked which started the guineas to go on alert. So ok,walk around go in Fester's run, cradle basket to me more, slowly put it down and he tried climbing the run fence! Hens going everywhere, feathers flying and I am in the middle of it. Left the grass got out put offending basket out of sight and he calmed down. Talk about crazy! He hasn't done anything like this in a long time. Yeah he doesn't see it often but dang that was too much!

Lol must have been something to do with the contents is my guess smell or just bad energy I suppose. Would have been a sight to see my 4 week old roo is getting like that he's a bantam but he won't let my girls especially new EE pullets go near anything new lol Roos are hilarious

He usually is the calm EE while his bantam buddy is the drama king. The basket shouldn't have any odor, it was grandma s garden basket for her veggies.

Odd hmm maybe your drama king started it and went into mass hysteria lol bantams such trouble makers you can't help but love

My bantam EE'S is the best lookout in that flock. He didnt panic until Fester started climbing fence walls. Then all 15 went bat crazy. Between him and the guineas in the run next to him almost nothing sneaks up on em. My 3 month old black mottled guy is a good lookout already as well. Lil stinker raises a fit over a wren flying over when they go in the yard.

This chick is the only one that hatched from a dozen eggs I had bought as Green Egger Naked Necks. Only 5 out of the 12 were even fertile and only this one hatched.

Just as my luck always goes though it looks like it's going to be a cockerel. The comb is awfully red and is pretty big. This chick is 5 and a 1/2 weeks old.

Any ideas to help this poor chicken. Just noticed this over the past few days.

14 week old EE
We don't have any roosters, she has always seemed to be one of our dominant birds, so I don't think the others are picking, only one spot, so likely not molting, maybe picking herself?

Overcrowding?
We have currently have 8 pullets from 12-14 weeks in a 60 sq foot run with free ranging most days. The coop is a little small, 15 sq feet. We are planning to reduce the flock to 4-6 once they start laying, but may need to do it sooner?

Heat stress/molting?

No other affected chickens so far.

That is feather picking. And it is probably caused by overcrowding stress. Both the coop and run are much too small for the number of birds living in it.

Thanks. That's what I was thinking

Like I said, our ultimate plan was to reduce the flock closer to lay, we have several chick raising friends ready to take the extra birds. I guess we'll need to do it soon. Do you think she is doing it to herself? Or the others are picking?

It could be either. And once feather picking starts, it can be very, very difficult to stop. Best get the numbers down within the next day or two, before they all start doing it.
