Got four more!

I ordered some more pullets from http://chickensforbackyards.com to replace Pinky, Pepper and the white EE that dissapeared before I could name her. And since one of my pullets decided 'she' would rather grow up to be a rooster (Chaz), I also added a Cuckoo Marans. I was hoping to include a Marans when I bought the seven back in April, but they sold out within two hours after they arrived at the feed store!. Hopefully all the newcomers will arrive healthy (and female!) sometime next month.
That's exactly what I ordered from them, cuckoo marans and EEs. They are doing GREAT! 3 weeks old yesterday.

Hello guys! Let me know how your adult grown Cuckoo Marans behave after they are 11/2 to 2 yrs old in your flocks. I had an aloof 7-lb Cuckoo Marans hen that was a bit testy to downright mean. She challenged the 4.5-lb alpha White Leghorn in the flock which the spunky Leg promptly put her in her place. Next the CM sneakily started to cannibalize a 2-lb Partridge Silkie in the coop at night and we stupidly thought the Silkie was molting. It wasn't until we added a 2nd Silkie to the flock that we started to see feathers missing on her also and she was definitely not old enough to molt. Later, we saw the CM outright attack the new 6-mo-old Silkie pullet until the little thing screamed! I immediately isolated the CM from the flock and she was re-homed the next day into an egg-layer's flock where other dual purpose hens like Black Copper Marans, Leghorns, and Javas didn't put up with her shenanigans! The EEs were a skittish group and stayed away from her or any of the other dominant dual-purpose hens. I think most EEs (and even pure Ameraucanas) have the temperament to avoid conflict if possible and would rather flee than fight a nasty challenger. I really love the temperaments of EEs and Ameraucanas but sadly our climate is too humid a good portion of the year and the one Blue Wheaten Ameraucana we had really suffered in our heatwaves. She was a sweety and sadly only lived to 3-yrs. As pullets most heavy breeds get along but it's when they become adults at about 2-yrs that their nice or mean selves show. I've cycled through different breeds in 5 years and found the heavier breeds like CMs are lazy foragers, huge eaters, and sometimes disappoint in the color of their eggs. But I still love the EEs and Amer's not only for their lovely eggs but also their great flock temperament. My Amer was not a heavy hen but she did have a big appetite to lay those XL pretty light blue eggs and we didn't mind having her sweet gentle soul around the yard.

Will do. I can say as of right now, the CMs are the most skittish of all my breeds, but are slowly and grudgingly starting to come around. 2 of my EEs are tolerant of being held and pretty sociable, and 2 are less than people-oriented. But these marans act like I'm trying to eat them alive when I have to pick them up for anything. Drama queens! I got my little CMaran cockeral, that is the same age, from a separate hatchery and he is just as wild but a bit more assertive, so I think it's the nature of the beast... Or bird. I'll keep you updated.

@Sylvester017

I have several 18 week old cuckoo Marans x Ameraucana crosses. One male is very mean to the other boys. He's been a fighter since 2 weeks old. Mr. Red, a splash Marans x Ameraucana cross, tried to attack my feet today, but I wouldn't let him. These guys were hand raised. They lived in the house until 7 weeks old. After being put outside they've been visited and picked up at LEAST four of five times a day. Over the last week or so they sort of turned mean. I don't know if it's just because they're young roosters or if it has anything to do with their breed cross. Ameraucanas are notorious for being very docile, so I know they didn't get their attitude from that half.
