I still will probably end up being a crazy bird lady anyways. We have .35 acres and so far I have 15 chickens and 4 ducks. When our yard is done and we have some trees grown out more for shade I plan on adding quail for meat and eggs and have thought of adding white homing pigeons for a wedding ceremony company. I had doves and pigeons growing up. I raised them with my dad as a hobby and we both enjoyed it. It was like our little thing we did together just the two of us. I want to live out in the country but while we have kids (my only is 2 in Feb) we have decided that being in a more suburban area near family will be better as he is away a lot for the type of work he does. Meanwhile I will try to make this place my practice ground for animal husbandry and turning my black thumb into a green one. So far we have very friendly neighbors who are on board with us doing what we want as long as it doesn't effect them. So of course setting everything up to be easy to keep clean and keeping them out of site is a priority.

Lmao I bet alot of people here could say that. A bunch of crazies all in one place lmfao

Same here except we live outside city limits so I can go wild if I really wanted to lol I planned on starting out with 10 ladies now I have 4 roosters and 29 hens

Ya we are right next to farming areas and there is actually a small feed lot I can see from my house (we are up on a hill. We are still technically in suburbs though and more houses are being built all over my area. They are building two schools right now within walking distance from our house. The ccnrs for our neighborhood actually are against any livestock but the original developer went belly up and the majority of the lots were sold off individually. We along with the majority of houses have broken a dozen of the ccnrs in the designs of our houses alone lol so needless to say they are completely out the window.

It does force us to be careful to appease our neighbors as they have the legal grounds to make us comply.

Whatever it was it couldn't have been that big, it was small enough to get through a 2"x3" hole, and not strong enough to pull a mature hen all the way back through. A neighbor had ALL his hens killed an he said it was from a weasel. That would fit the description so unless a better theory comes along I'll go with weasel. It hasn't shown up again, so I'm assuming the 'Roo has discouraged it for now.

After I build the new coop I plan on rearranging the pen fence so I get more area (the birds will be locked inside the coop while I'm working). I also have a few rolls of 2' wide HC that I am going to install along the bottom edge with part of it buried a few inches down for better predator protection.

Everyone in my neighborhood who was prepared for coyotes has lost birds to weasels. So I'm trying to be prepared for both but weasels are difficult to ... Weasel out! Best of luck, I've got no tips so far other than use hardware cloth. But when free ranging, weasels use squirrel and gopher holes to sneak around so unless you're walking your property every day to stamp out holes and tall grasses... Just gotta have a flock with good look outs I guess :-/

We kind of have the best of both worlds. We live on the outskirts of town. Our country doesn't limit chickens by county but instead by acreage. We are allowed to have roosters but we do have to follow a noise compliance if neighbors complain. Where we live everyone has livestock though so no one cares. We have about 40 chickens and 12 ducks. We are in the process of building a barn right now lol. :)

Ya I don't think anyone here really cares either. I swear I heard a goat while walking my daughter around our area coming from someone's backyard. Still it would be nice if we didn't have to worry about if we are breaking the law or annoying neighbors.
