Easter Egger club!

Sorry to ask silly questions but I am curious. I have 4 hens I have raised from chicks. I bought them at the farm supply store and they were labeled Ameraucanas (sp) I have had 2 of them for 2 years and the other 2 are less than a year old. 2 do not have muffs or ear tufts, 2 do. 3 lay olive eggs, 1 lays blue eggs, 2 are dark, 1 almost black with copper tips like a lace wing, the other 2 are light buff colored. All are so sweet (the black colored one is the most fierce but still gentle unless you are silly enough to wear flip flops into the run with treats..toes look like something good to eat! Are these EE's because they lay colored eggs? Are they EE's because of the ear tufts (in which case 2 aren't) Why do they lay olive eggs instead of blue eggs? I want to sell some of my eggs but people are not familiar with 'green eggs' and I get a lot of questions such as 'are they rotten' what's wrong with your chickens, what are you feeding them that they are laying olive eggs? I would like to have chickens that lay blue eggs only but I love my girls and I won't change them out. But in the future I would like to have the 'blue eggs' instead of the green ones. How do I choose chicks that I will have blue eggs from? Thank you. And if I am in the wrong spot sorry and could you direct me to the right area. I have tried to read about all the genetic traits, etc. But it is still not telling me what I need to know about the blue eggs..

Okay, because I don't want my bantams to get crushed by weight, thank you for helpin-OH MY GOSH!!! NEVER THOUGHT I'D SEE THE DAY WHEN I SAW BLUE AND DARK BROWN EGGS!!!!!!!!!! Okay, yeah. No doubt in my mind I am getting Aracuanas.

My EE rooster gets busy with the 2 Sebright hens all the time. He's at least 4 times their size. Honestly, they're the only 2 he really pays that kind of attention to regularly. They don't seem to mind at all. I don't think you should have any trouble breeding your bantams to your full size rooster. Unless you've got a Brahma or a big Barred Rock roo or something like that.

What you have are "Easter Eggers" and not true Ameraucanas. Pure bred Ameraucana chicks run about $20 per chick, so the chicks they're selling as Ameraucanas in feed stores for $3 a piece are actually mutts. Wonderful, fabulous, beautiful mutts.

When people ask you about the olive green eggs, explain that egg color is genetic. Just like people are born with a certain eye color, chickens are born with a certain egg color programmed into their DNA. Ameraucanas are blue egg layers, Leghorns are white egg layers, Rhode Island Reds are brown egg layers, and so on. If you cross an Ameraucana with a chicken who lays brown eggs, you might end up with a chicken who has the genetic programming to lay green eggs, hence the "olive eggers" in your flock. Shell color does not have anything to do with the quality of the egg inside--something I have to explain a LOT to people who tell me they prefer brown eggs over white because the brown eggs are "better".

Thank you so much! You have answered the questions I have been having about my girls very simply! I love my girls and I won't replace them because of egg color and if people are silly enough to not want my eggs because of color that's okay too, I have a waiting list of people who understand it makes no difference. I just felt ignorant because some people know enough to know that Ameraucana's are supposed to lay blue eggs and when I tell them that's what I have I get the 'why are the eggs green' question. Your eggs are beautiful. They have the perfect color and bloom on them. Thank you so much for your help. I will change my signature to EE's besides which Ameraucana is so hard to spell. LOL..(one more question is the 1 hen that is laying the blue eggs just a dominate strain of the Ameraucana signature blue egg or just the 'luck of the draw'? Everyone wants the 'blue eggs'). Silly people I should mark them way up! .

Here is my EE!!! Lays light olive green.

Okay, I hope Amauracanas aren't very big
