Easter Egger club!

My EE rooster just died due to sour crop :hit I was going to use him for breeding next year. I only have one other roo and I have 28 hens. He is very laid back too so i don't think he can handle all of them. How many hens can one roo handle to keep all of them fertile? I am so devastated.

I think I read somewhere 1 rooster to every 12 hens to keep a high fertility rate.

I'm sorry about your rooster

Yea, it was just a freak thing. He was my best rooster I had. He would of gave some pretty cute chicks too

Hello Everyone, This is my Easter Egger
along with her coop mate Dominque, the Dominque.
When my EE was younger she laid a lime green egg, they were a huge contrast to all the lite brown to chocolate brown eggs I got from the rest of my hens. My question is; can a chicken change the color of her eggs?

The reason I ask is quite simple, the wife and I had been discussing adding her to the processing list due to the fact that we haven't gotten a green egg in almost 4 months now. We believed she quit laying any eggs, but now I'm not so sure. Her eggs were always kind of weird shaped, and usually larger then all the others.

If anyone recalls in another thread I had mentioned that I had 35 (mutt) chicken eggs in the incubator, seeing I wasn't getting any green eggs I assumed that I had no EE eggs. Well out of those 35 eggs I had 31 hatch, as the chicks grew I started to notice things that I couldn't explain. This little one looks a whole lot like my EE, only problem is she has yellow legs. BUT... it doesn't stop there. I also have several others that have green legs, just like my EE, but are white or reddish in color.

So once again I'm asking can an EE chicken change the color of her eggs? Every egg that was placed into the incubator was some shade of brown. And to this day we are still getting odd shaped brown eggs. I have 19 laying hen so unless I catch her in the act I don't think I'll ever figure out who is giving me those eggs.

OK well thanks, and sorry it's a little long. Bee Good KWS

I have heard of the tiny or shade of the egg egg to change color but not the whole color to change. Can you put her in a pin by her self for a few days to see if u get an egg?

A green egg is a blue egg with a brown top coat. It's possible that the blue tint in the shell has faded as she's gotten older, leaving an egg that's more brown in appearance than green.

Quote: I know that alot, if not most Ameraucanas are more seasonal layers. As the season goes on their eggs can get lighter. One of mine will get almost to the point of being white. After a break in laying, her eggs will have a stronger blue again. So I guess it stands to reason that a green egg layer could have the same thing going on, and if they are less "seasonal" with their laying & the blue faded out enough, Like estamets said, the egg could turn brown on you?
I have not had this happen in my green egg layers, but I guess it could?

Personally I would really like to see you test this by separating her and seeing if she gives you a brown egg!
