Easter Egger club!

So it's normal then. okay. Wow, grayish. That's cool. I have one easter egger that lays light blue-gray eggs that turn into a very light, almost white, sage green color after a couple days.

It's a shame the outer shell doesn't keep the pretty blue color. I found the inside shells stay bluer than the outside of the shell.

I wish I knew what was going on with my girls.... all three of my Easter Eggers have stopped laying! It started during molt in August with one and finally ending in November with the third. They are only 18 months old, far too young to stop laying. My Wyandottes and Australorps are wonderful layers; of the four of them, we get 2-3 brown eggs per day. Unfortunately, no blue eggs for over three months.. Any ideas as to why they're no longer laying?

At that age, they are old enough for annual molting and the winter break. It's normal. Egg production is directly tied to the amount of daylight they are exposed to. Shorter days means that production slows, and eventually stops entirely. The good news is that the solstice is just a few more weeks away, and then the days will start lengthening again.

Chickens are individualistic, and Easter Eggers even more so. I have three of laying age (they started last September) and one has stopped laying while the other two are still going like crazy. One thing nice about EEs is you can always tell which bird layed which egg, assuming you were able to discover of each bird's egg color. My Black Australorp is still laying as well. A first for me for that breed.

Cackle Hatchery now has placeholders on their website for blue and lavender Ameraucanas. They started offering black Ameraucanas last year. Interesting. None are sexed, however, but still. Tempted to see what they're like. I love their Easter Eggers. My rooster just finished molting his face fluff and he's adorable. I mean fierce. He's fierce. (Don't tell him I called him adorable).

Pure Ameraucana breed or the Easter Eggers - neither should be considered production birds as I found out the hard way. When they DO lay they lay pretty large eggs but nowhere near the production you find in the widely common Wyans, 'Lorps, Legs, RIR, BR, etc. The dark-egg layers can be sporadic too as we found out. Our best consecutive egg-layers ever were White Legs and Breda.

My EE stops laying late summer and picks up early spring. Her eggs are big, pointy, turquoise, and about 3 a week.

She's a pet, for sure!

This pretty little lady showed up outside my chicken coop about three weeks ago so I adopted her. The other girls have accepted her just fine & she rewarded my kindness with this just yesterday. Her name is Ms. Lorena. I'm sure she had quite the experience getting to my place because no one close has chickens! One brave girl. Thank you Ms. Lorena

3-4 a week here too, but two of mine are still laying and show little sign of stopping!

They're generally friendly, quirky, highly individualistic and infinitely colorful, from their beards all the way back to their eggs.
Definitely pets, not 'factory' birds. My favorite out of all the types I've had.
