Easter Egger Male or Female

View attachment 4268820

Updated pics at 8 weeks - I’m almost positive he’s male 😳
I’m really confused here - what’s an EE doing with yellow legs?

Note the slate blue legs on the pullet next to our mystery bird. Both my EE’s had slate blue eggs, and the younger one’s legs turned willow green. But not yellow.

Yeah, it really depends on what's in the mix. Easter egger is really a catch-all term for any chicken with the potential for a blue egg gene. For a long time most easter eggers were ameraucana/americana based, which meant they were likely to have a pea comb, beards, muffs, and slate or willow legs. Legbar based easter eggers are becoming more common now too, and these easter eggers have a chance of inheriting single combs, crests, and yellow legs from their legbar ancestry.

Keep us updated on this one! I'm kinda leaning towards female. I don't see any definite roo traits yet. He/she looks a lot like my EE pullet at about this age - tail and all. She had me concerned for a long time also, so much so that I posted on BYC about her.

Here's the post and how she looked at 9 weeks: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/8-week-possible-easter-egger-cockerel.1672902/post-28759019

See the photos and responses by @DLA also - really neat how varied EEs can be! But yes it does make them hard to sex early on sometimes.

I think male too, look at the body size compared the to pullet on the left
Good point! I noticed that also, and yeah the legs are sturdy on the suspected cockerel. But size can vary sometimes by a lot, especially with mixed breeds. This is a fun one to watch, for sure!

$20 gender DNA test tells you in 2 days! But yep, the anticipation is always fun!
