Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Thank you for the comment! I love Butters too...very skittish though. Had NO TAIL AT ALL until about 2 weeks ago!
The reason I question Cheeks right now is more attitude based...lots of chest bumping , feather puffing etc. I know pullets do that too...sometimes I guess you just wait for an egg or a crow!!! ;)

Cheeks has a pullet's coloring. Cockerels will not look like this. The pullets are the one who work out the pecking order. My cockerel at 13 weeks did not interact with the girls like that. He seemed "above the fray" but was obviously dominant, as he always ate what he wanted (the little piggy).

Your girls are at the "teen age" stage and are acting like teenagers!

Mine also are going through some repositioning in the hierarchy as they are starting to lay (4-5 months) and some are downright cranky. It's my girls near the bottom of the order that seem to squabble the most, like they're trying hard not to come in last! The dominant girls only have to turn a head or take a step and the others give way. Only very occasionally do they need to reassert themselves.

Teenagers is right! Gossipy, nit picky, chest bumping teenagers!
When typically do EE's start to lay? 18-20 weeks? Hoping to get some eggs before the end of summer...cant wait to see the egg colors. All 4 of mine were hatched from the same blue clutch. Some older clutches from the same hen are laying green and blue.

My 13 week old roo runs and hides when the 20 week old pullets even look at him. Poor guy. All I can say is "You girls had better be nicer to him, because he'll get even with you!"

Not sure if there is a typical much of anything for EEs!

Would expect them to start around 5 months or so, give or take a few weeks. Look for reddening and swelling of the comb (and wattles if they have them) and a widening out of the fluffy butts for signs. (There are also more "personal" ways of checking -think obgyn-

but I have never tried this.) Don't know if it happens to others, but my first layer (a SLWyandotte) had big personality change, got very cranky and LOUD about a week before she started laying. Now 2 others are grumpy, so I am anticipating more eggs soon.

(If it weren't for these silly little smilies, my post count would probably be about 5!

My cockerel really started feeling his oats and crowing (at 4 am!

) around 13 weeks, but he was in with pullets of the same age. No older girls to keep him in check. Gave him to a lady who wanted a rooster for her hens. Everybody's happy now.

Wow! So I'm planning on taking some pics of my veryyyy suspicious EE pullet tomorrow and post them on here! She's definitely not an Ameracauna as they said she was and now she looks very interesting for an EE? She has some feathers coming up on her legs, she also has an extra toe on one foor, some odd shaped and thick feet an legs, some odd scattered coloring (lots of red patches ugh..), a pretty big pink comb, and some black dots coming in up by here face and on here head that I noticed recently? She's an odd chick! Love her to death! Don't want to give her away from pretty sure shes a him!! I'll post pics tomorrow! Pretty sure she's pecking at the other 2 pullets too....

I took a photo of the emerging saddle feathers. I could see these feathers developing as pinfeathers two full weeks ago-- so, I knew for sure (in case the crowing didn't give it away) that my chick was a cockerel by the time that he was 8 weeks old simply based on these feathers.

To look for them on your chick, you'll need a hands-on approach. These feathers don't grow out through to be visible from the outside for quite some time, but they are there if you don't mind investigating.

The saddle feathers grow in two tracts; one on each side of the spine, from the middle of the back down over the pelvis of the bird. They grow from much higher than they appear once the rooster is fully feathered! Don't look near the rump or tail, look much higher up on the back. To look for them, spread the feathers that run down the middle of the spine and the back of the wing feathers/side feathers so that you can find this tract. It will not be growing on very young chicks, but once they start to feather out good you should be able to find them! Once you locate the pin feathers, pay close attention to the feather itself starting to peek out of the tip of each pin feather. On boys, it is very pointed, and the feather barbs are not webby or connected. You can slide a finger or even a little piece of paper under the feather to get a peek at the shape.

I tried to take a photo of this. The feathers are really starting to develop, in this photo, but you can tell the shape of the feather even before it is this developed.
You can click this for a bigger version so you can see the shape of the tips better.
In this photo, my finger on the right side is holding back the feather tract that runs down the spine. My fingers on the left are holding back the wing and the side "pocket" feathers on the chick. These saddle feathers are not visible unless I spread his other feathers out!

If you look at the "youngest" pin feather, you can see that the feather emerging from it is very fine tipped, like a very fine artist's paint brush. The larger feathers have the obvious shape to them and the loose barbs at the ends (and iridescence on the black).

I hope that this helps someone!

Well, I checked my 3 main (Camo, Groucho, and Harpo) "pullets" in question, and non of them look like this to me...so confused.

Maybe they really are pullets! Wouldn't that be great! Sexing birds from pics is certainly not an exact science. Of course, they could just be slow feathering in.

Post some pics of them soon.

Ok so I finally took some pics of my very suspicious "Amerecauna pullet". She's definitely an EE. She is about 5 weeks old and she developed this pretty bright pink comb about a week ago! It's a single comb not a peacomb though. I also noticed recently that she developed one extra toe on one of her feet? She also has some specks and markings coming in near her face and on her head? Does she have silky in her maybe? I'm very confused? She looks very much like a little cockerel too! Her legs are very odd shaped, and pink? Oh ya she has some little sprouts of feathers on her legs that I also spottes recently! She has interesting/patchy coloring and marking and she has a lot of red... :( Anyone have thoughts? She seems like she may be causing trouble with my other EE and my Barred Rock pullets? She might be pecking at them etc.? Please help! Thanks!

The pic above looks very silkie ish almost?

Extra toe on right foot

Wow pic heavy...
