Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Goldie is a very pretty color. I'd love to see a recent pic. Is she a pullet for sure? I like where this pic is taken. Wish we could potty train them, then we could have house pets!

Here's a picture of her from last night. I think she's a pullet, not 100% sure, she came from a sexed run, hope they are right!! I wish they were potty trained, I just happen to be using our spare bathtub as a brooder, the shower doors keep them in nicely!

My Frizzle OE is 4 weeks old this weekend. Comb has grown quite a bit but is still pale. Do you think there is any chance this is a pullet? I want to keep her so badly, she is the prettiest thing Ive ever seen!

My first thought just seeing this pic was 'cockerel.' The comb pics make me lean that way as well. This looks like a case of hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. You'll know in 2 weeks. Hope it's a pullet. It would be really cool to see how s/he looks all feathered out. I sure wish roosters came with a volume control. I can't keep any either.

I have not had a chance to read through the entire post but I hope to before Monday. We are planning on picking up some chicks from our feed store and I am wanting to ad a few EEs to our current flock. Last year I got 3, one yellow one with chipmunk stripes and what reminded me of egyptian eyeliner, and 2 brown chipmunk ones. Of course the beautiful yellow one turned out to be a rooster and the mousey brown ones are boring colored pullet. I am NOT complaining since the roo turned out to be beautiful and is not mean at all. He is DH's fav and I always pick on him because when the dogs are outside the roo hides behind the hens in the corner.

Anyway, I would love to have some EEs that are some different colors. Maybe more white or something. Is there any way to get an idea of adult color by looking at the down color? I have come to terms with the fact that all the pretty EE chicks are roos so I better pick the uglies right out the gate but I would love to add more color to the EE portion of my flock.

Hello Everyone!

I thought I would add to the long list of newbies who are trying to determine sex. I felt better after reading through this thread but then got nervous when "Adelaide's" comb looks fairly pink and it looks like there are three rows of comb (this is "pea-like" right?) S(he) is 5 1/2 weeks old..

Sorry about the pics. They are from my iphone, BOTH my hubby's camera and mine are broken (can you believe it?!?)

90% sure this is a pullet!

Thank you all who helped me identify my Eleanor as now Elliott, the all white Easter Egger. This morning as I approached my coop I heard the err, err, errrrr and I thought there goes Elliott. However, once in the pen I see my other Easter Egger, Matilda, stretch her/his head in the air and err, err, errrr. So now I'm thinking she/he is probably also a rooster. She or he is large like Elliott, not quite as large a comb, and not as obvious of pointed hackle feathers and almost no saddle feathers. She/he does jump on the other girls like Elliott does. Here are my best pictures. The dark coloring around the neck makes it hard to see if feathers are pointed. I used to think dogs were hard to photograph, chicken are way worse.

Yep, cockerel

Rebekah thinks Matthew would be a nice "rename" for Matilda

Can't tell mahogany red shoulder patches under the red light but that bird doesn't seem to have the uniformity of color/pattern of the girls.

And with regard to taking pictures of chickens, I agree 150%. They won't stand still for anything. If you see something that looks interesting, as soon as you come around the corner with a camera, they are all underfoot hoping for treats! "No girls, I didn't bring you anything" "No girls, the camera is NOT food".

K9trnr, Matilda is a Matthew. The picture on the roost really sealed it for me -- pretty sure I see pointy saddles and the patchiness of his coloring is masculine (not to mention that comb!). And I completely agree that started pullets should be sexed correctly. I'd call and insist upon replacements or a refund.

I have no idea what their "guarantee" is on started pullets but if one does not want or can not legally have roosters, there should be a replacement and a refund, this isn't "day old hope I'm right sexing". And what do you do with the cockerel, especially if you don't want someone to make soup out of it?

Oh my, that tail. Just like Elliot's and not at ALL like the other birds in the picture.

I agree that this one looks a bit like a cockerel, though give him/her some time.

Don't you just HATE it when they stick their beaks in the light socket??
