Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Halli, Adelaide sure does look like a pullet. Wouldn't bet my life on it, but she's a pullet. Her comb would be more prominent and brighter red if a rooster. (Almost 6 weeks?)

Monkey looked like this as a youngster. Very similar to yours.

This was her around 4 months. I think Adelaide is just developing the dark pattern on her neck feathers, which makes them look pointed. A rooster's will be thin and sharply pointed. I think saddle feathers are easier to see if they are present.
my pullet could be your pullets twin. the color is a little lighter because of the camera. and she was only 2 1/2 months

nova, they are alike! I think it is a very common pattern for EE pullets, which is good for me because I happen to love the look. Monkey seems rather ferocious in the pic, with her eagle-eye, but she is low in the pecking order. Her comb grew since she started laying so she looks more like a chicken now. Have to get some new pics!

Thanks All!

Nova - they DO look like twins!

I am picking up an additional pullet (really more of a hen) Araucana this weekend. She looks so different from my EE. So excited to have a nice variety of ladies! This is a bit addicting!

I have better pictures of Matilda. Trying to confirm if a Rooster. She/he is large like my other Eater Egger that ended up being a rooster, very thick legs. Crows a loud full err, err, errrrrr. Has started to show points in the hackle feathers coming in. The saddle feathers are a little less evident, but she/he had all his saddle feather pecked out from the other birds in his 4 day shipping through a blizzard when he came to my farm. Jumps on the other girls back. No eggs yet at around 24 weeks old. Might be able to see it in my pics, has a green shade showing in tail feathers. Any help much appreciated, i need to contact the hatchery and get a refund for now maybe to wrong sexed birds instead of one.

Holy cow that first one could be my chick Goldie. I will try to get a better picture , she has filled out a lot more since that picture was taken.

I can see why this one's confusing. The feathers are a bit rough, but the comb and coloring look like a cockerel's. By the way, greenish iridescent feathers often occur on females so by itself is not an indicator, but that looks to be the beginnings of a big ol' rooster tail. In the last pic, there are some feathers raised up near the tail which look like saddle feathers. They'll get longer and sharper as he grows. I am thrown off by the age, though. Looks younger than 6 months to me, but could just be a slow grower. There was a very similar looking bird posted a while ago that ended up being a pullet. I'd be tempted to tell you to wait a couple more weeks if it weren't for the crowing and mounting. That's usually enough proof. You know the saying, If it looks like a duck.... Hope you get some sort of refund.

Is the white bird in the background one you had asked about before? That is definitely a rooster. A nice one!

Matilda looks very much like a boy and with the behavior you describe I'd say its a pretty sure thing

I'm wondering on the age myself. He or she seems to be slowly showing all the signs my white one has over the past 2 weeks. I guess we'll see what the next few weeks brings. My all white one has really turned into an obvious rooster now. He is a very handsome boy. If they are both roosters I am going to keep Elliott the white one and try to re-home the red/black one. Here's a picture of Elliott from last night.

Goldie is a very pretty color. I'd love to see a recent pic. Is she a pullet for sure? I like where this pic is taken. Wish we could potty train them, then we could have house pets!

I actually read an articule about potty training chickens. You have to start early and be consistent, but it can be done. But why take all that time when you could just get them chicken diapers!!! LOL
