Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Hello Everyone!

I thought I would add to the long list of newbies who are trying to determine sex. I felt better after reading through this thread but then got nervous when "Adelaide's" comb looks fairly pink and it looks like there are three rows of comb (this is "pea-like" right?) S(he) is 5 1/2 weeks old..

Sorry about the pics. They are from my iphone, BOTH my hubby's camera and mine are broken (can you believe it?!?)

Thank you all. I think you are all right also, just wanted more opinions since I am a first time chicken owner. I guess I will have to come up with a different name, so much for Eleanor.

Glad you got conformation about him. EEs with the peas combs and the lack of wattles are not as obviously roosters, especially when you are just starting out with chickens. Also, solid white doesn't give you the clues to sex that most of the colored birds do. Good luck with your chickens and er..... em.... Elmer?

Adalaide looks like a big girl! And I think she is a girl, with a typical pullet color pattern. The combs are not a perfect indicator, because some EEs have a lot of straight comb influence mixed with the pea type. I also found that my young pullet would 'pink up' a bit if she was excited or hot, but she was not the raspberry pink like the cockerel. You can compare yours to my two hatchery chicks who were 5-6 weeks at the time.

Monkey the pullet. RuPaul the unexpected cockerel.

I'm a LITTLE worried about the pointy hackle feathers but MAYBE they are just brand new and haven't fully opened up? The ones higher up the neck are rounder. And the comb is maybe 3 row.

I'm guessing this will be a beautiful bird.

I noticed that too, but thought it was more the pointed color pattern on the hackles rather than their shape. It did make me hesitate, though. The op should check for the shape of the feather. Have you ever seen an EE with that type of overall coloring end up being a rooster? I guess there's always exceptions. No saddle feather, no dark red showing on the wings.... yet. What do you think? Maybe some others will offer an opinion.

Hoping for a pullet as that seems what the op is hoping for!
