Okay, my broody hatched out a few eggs almost 4 weeks ago, three of which are EE's. I know they are still young, but was hoping for a few "opinions" as to whether they are pullets or cockerels.
Ist chick, Daisy, feather pattern looks girl to me, comb looking roo.
2nd chick, Cupcake, is all grey. I'm leaning more pullet, but not sure.
3rd chick, Pancake, looks very similar to Cupcake but is turning more black than grey, and comb is a little more prominent.
So, any guesses? Or just wait a few more weeks......It is so hard to be patient! I really want Daisy to be a pullet, but I'm thinking the comb is pretty wide and pink for just short of four weeks. I think Cupcake is a girl, and Pancake I'm just not sure. Thanks!
It didn't look roo to me then, and still does not look roo to me now. The light brown/red tint at the end of the wing tip does not indicate roo. It was already there at 4 weeks and hasn't changed. Overall pattern is that of a pullet. Comb is not big or red for a 10 wk old. I'd say you got yourself a pretty girl.
Yeah, I'm leaning boy on Pancake. He also stands taller than the other two. I know it's way too soon to know for sure, so we will let them grow some more before making any decisions. I can't keep roos where I live, so I'm hoping I don't have too many to rehome! I have homes waiting for any extra pullets that I end up with, but roos are much harder. I already know one of the OEs is a roo, he is so classically roo it's funny. slow feathering, thick legs, big comb, bossy attitude.
Here they are! Chick #1 is Amber, very dark, maybe black instead of blue, but still pretty young. Chick #2 is Chippy. A little lighter, and has a straight comb. We aren't worried about the comb, b/c we don't plan on breeding them. So what do you think?
Hmm. Not sure yet. I'd lean a little toward roo on chippy but not sure. Amber is a black. And they both look like they might have GLW in their genetics somewhere.
Yeah, all of our eggs were from a local backyard breeder, and I didn't see the parents. We were just looking for local eggs for our broody, we weren't sure how she would do and didn't want to spend a lot on "fancy" eggs. She said they were BLRW, but I think they are a little off type too. We don't really care, just hoping for at least one of them to be a pullet!
