Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Well I haven't built the egg boxes onto my coop yet. I didn't think my chickens were going to start laying until he end of August. I thought I had plenty of time! Yesterday we found our first egg on our back patio from one of the other chickens. After that happen I put a crate inside the coop with some pine shavings for bedding along with a golf ball for encouragement to lay there. My EE did go into the box, but chose to not lay there. :idunno

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/906190/4-1-2-week-old-americana-mixes-roosers-or-hens I have more pictures and a bit more explanation there, but here are some of my Americana crosses. (Not all have pea combs or green/blue legs) at 4 1/2 weeks. Percy Gizzmo Johnny Scorpius Ariya Fred Darek Teddy Percy No idea which are roosters or hens, other than Darek being almost definitely a rooster, but what do you guys think?
Percy, scorpions, gizmo, and fred would be my guesses for your pullets, but I'm not completely certain on Percy, that comb is tricky. The rest are looking somewhat like cockerels. I would still wait more time and see though, sometimes they throw you for a loop.

I'm back one more time! I think my flock has mostly revealed itself, but there is still one I'm a little unsure of.
These are our two confirmed hens:

Two confirmed roosters: (the little white rooster started crowing a few days ago!)

THIS is the bird who has me a little confused. It has a three-rowed comb, but it is much paler than the other two roosters. This bird is much more passive, and hangs out most of the time with the hens and shows little rooster behaviour. (Doesn't really fight like the other two nor show the same aggression/confidence). I guess I just really want it to be a hen....thoughts?

Standing with the two hens:

Back feather pattern. I really like this bird's colouring.

I LOVE his coloring....I agree though, looks like a roo, just may be a little less dominant.

Well everyone here was right, my EE turned out to be a pullet! She laid her first green egg today!
Pretty!
Try and get her into a nesting box! I say that as the chicken mom of 4 stubborn laying pullets who would rather lay ANYWHERE else...lol
Yesterday I pulled 2 eggs out of an old feed bin, and one out of my laundry basket.....

That's so funny!
I have to admit, I've never had those problems. Mine started to lay in the middle of a record cold winter, so a nice cozy nest box was a preferred location. Of course, if they do ever lay somewhere outside, my dogs would gobble them up ASAP. (Eggs, not the hens)

Okay, the lighter guys close ups for all your considerations!

Approximately 8 weeks old, last pictures were posted around 5 weeks, I believe.

The roo. The one who holds his tail upright, has the darkest red on his wings, and is developing black around his neck. Last time I posted pictures everyone was pretty sure he is a he.

#1 = The comb looks pretty thin & pale for a male of 8weeks. If his legs are about the same thickness as the others, you may have a pullet.

Second. This was the one I originally thought was a boy, buy seems more feminine now. Most everyone was thinking pullet last time I posted. The color is deceiving in the pictures, and she/he is actually a much lighter shade than the roo. More peachy.

#2 = The comb is kind of wide, but no real color. My guess is pullet.

Last one! This one is tough, at least for me. Sure the comb looks redder, even more so than my roo. However, he/she is much less colorful (once again, pictures are making it darker) and seems pretty neutral in the flock. The wind was blowing, so if he/she looks spiky, that's why.

#3 = I'm seeing both traits in this one. The comb looks too small to be that red. If it was extra hot that day or sitting in the sun, a pullet's comb may darken a little. Take a close look at the individual neck feathers around the collar. Is the pointy look coming from the color of the feather (but the actual feather has a rounded edge = pullet) or are the neck feathers pointed (boy)?

Rooster vs Pullet stance: It's hard to capture on film, but the boys tend to stand more upright (1st pic), while the pullets have a more rounded body posture.
These are my orpingtons (not EEs), but hopefully you can see what I mean.

Another thing we've noticed is that my daughter's favorite is ALWAYS a male. I think its because initially they have more personality & are the 1st to come running to greet you.

How helpful! Thank you :)
