Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Pickles is 5 weeks old, she developed faster than all the other chickens. She was the meanest chick, but now blends in quite nicely. I am a little concerned about the feather coloring behind her neck- hoping those burnt red brown patches are ok, and she is a girl.

Thanks for putting up with my posts...learning a lot about my chickens!

My new babies,
400

400

400

My husband just shook his head and said "more chicks," I said "but they were free with the feed I bought"

The lady at the farm I got the white one from says its a mix of her leghorn and ameracauna. The golds are 6 weeks and the white is 8 weeks. here's some better pics:

Yes, at 8 weeks, that's a pullet. Doesn't look like a pea comb, so you may be getting white/beige eggs from this one.

Oh, you've got to give Jimmy a chance to grow up before you can see his temperament Right now he's the equivalent of a 12 yr old boy- a lot of growing yet to do and not entirely in control of himself!

(Oh, and the new pics show him to be 100% cockerel.)

I would say both little Esmerelda and big Stretch are pullets. With a peas comb, the width of the comb is not as telling as how "tall" it is (how much it sticks up and shows in profile view). For both of these, the even pattern tells the sex.

Less sure about Pickles, but think she's a pullet. (I can't see the comb very well.) The color pattern is not completely even, but the colors are subdued and pullet-like. Pullets can have black necks, but not black breasts. If Pickles continues to develop gold/salmon on the breast, then pullet. If black starts developing, then I'd think cockerel. Give it another week, but my money's on pullet.

Not that you asked, but what is the barred/cuckoo chick? Seems to have a lot of white, which is more of a cockerel trait.

Look what hatched this week!

My broody hen stole some eggs. She was needed to hatch eggs for my daughter, so these orig eggs got put into the incubator. The silver is a pure Lav orp, the blacks are Lav orp x Cream Crested Legbars, and the yellows are Lav Orp x EEs. (no cheeks, though)

Can I call the OrpxCCLs Eatser Eggers? (Should lay greenish eggs, but look nothing like my reg EEs)

Oooh, how adorable. I want to see the orp x CCL when they get older! Did they get crests?

Oh well that's good to know, because her comb is flat. And while her neck is blackish her breast is really tan/salmon. So that is good.
