Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Our 1st easter egger had a tail like that. Did some research, and found out it is called a tailless easter egger. Our poor Duckie was truly a mutt. Layed green eggs, was tailless, and had no earmuffs. But she was a sweet heart nonetheless. I still hate the neighbors dog that murdered her.
Given heritage of EEs frequently includes Aracauna, it's not so far-fetched that one could lack a tail ;)

She has a tail, it just curves down and around her bottom. Sometimes it will stick out a little bit but nowhere near what any of my other birds look like. I have another one who looks like she doesn't really have a tail but this ones is actually really long. I tried to find any pictures online like it but couldn't find anything. The only thing I can think of is maybe the sickle feathers and she is actually a cockerel???? Any thoughts?

Can you get a comb shot? About 50% of my pullets this year had curly tails when they were that age, so it's not indicative of a cockerel. When she (assuming that's it's a pullet, I can't see her comb) gets her final set of feathers they will be straight.

I think if a cockerel is growing sickles, he would already have a fat red comb. Yours looks more like a pullet to me. It may end up losing those curved feathers as it grows. Kind of neat looking. Keep us posted.

Just so everybody understands, tailless birds like Araucanas are missing the fleshy, fatty knob at the end of the backbone. (My gran called it the parson's nose or pope's nose.) That's where tail feathers grow from and the chicken can raise or lower them or even wag their tail like a dog. Sometimes birds with short tail feathers can look like they don't have a tail, but it's there.
