First off, my hens appear healthy and range from 2-4 years old. Not sure which one this came from. They are on a steady diet of Scratch & Peck layer crumbles and table scraps.

The egg is without a shell, which I’ve seen before. But then there’s this firm growth that came with it. What the heck is it?? Some kind of calcium build up?

I’m no expert, and it hasn’t happened to me yet, but every time I’ve seen someone post something like this, the consensus is that it’s lash egg 😣

If you still have it (the lump, not the soft egg), can you cut it open and photograph inside and/or describe what's inside?
Unfortunately when I started reading about lash egg and some scary things about touching it, I immediately bagged it and disposed it.

Looks like a classic lash egg.

If you just see it just the once, not a big deal. But it can be a sign of saplingitis, which is an infection in the reproductive system. I've seen recommendations to consider giving a calcium supplement for a few days afterward, because that can help the chicken pass any more material in her system.

If she passes any more like that, you should consider seeking vet care or at the very least read up on how to help a chicken with saplingitis. Either way she would need antibiotics.

Keep a close eye on the nest box and don't wait long seeking help if she passes another one like that.

If you get another one (hopefully you don't) be sure to cut it open and photograph it, and wash your hands thoroughly after. Because I'm 50/50 on whether that's a lash egg or some sort of deformed egg.
