So disappointing was looking forward to some green or blue eggs. Very handsome guy but not going to be able to keep. On 4 1/2 acres but I still back up to subdivision and afraid this big bad boy will be to loud.
"Too loud" and "can't keep" depend on who decides if a rooster will bother the neighbors. Is it YOUR decision or are there town/city ordinances that say YOU can't have a rooster? If not and the possibility a crowing rooster MIGHT bother the neighbors is the only reason you will get rid of the cockerel, you can keep it until it proves to be a problem. And if there ARE no ordinances against you having a rooster, you can decide if it is being a bother or if you care (being a neighborly type).
And how much noise does the rooster make compared to all the barking dogs, lawn mowers, leaf blowers and loud exhaust vehicles in this subdivision?
I have a neighbor to the north about 400' up the road that has 2 roosters. Yep we hear them but it isn't like they are in our house. There is another neighbor south but mostly west, also about 400' away. He has a dog that barks
WAY MORE than the roosters crow. (*) Especially when someone is home because I don't think they ever play with the dog, just keep it tied up and yell at it to be quiet. AND they have a car with an intentionally loud muffler. I KNOW when they are leaving their house because I hear the car start and all the way down their driveway. I KNOW when they are coming home. If they come from the north I hear them before the car gets to our house and all the way up their driveway regardless of their direction on the road. I don't hear engine noise from most other vehicles. IMHO, if you can hear someone's exhaust 400' away it is WAY too loud and should be illegal. I would trade their "muffler" and dog for a couple of roosters, no question.
BTW, roosters crow at light ANY time of day or night, it isn't just "hey guys, the sun is coming up". This was news to ME when we moved here. If you don't want the rooster to crow at dawn in June when the sun comes up at 4:30, keep it in a dark coop and let it out at a more reasonable hour. This, of course, would not be ideal for your layers who use the amount of "daylight" to decide when "laying season" starts and ends.
* The guy about 250' directly across the road has a dog and my daughter didn't know it for A YEAR! "When did he get a dog?" she asked when she saw it in the yard. And HE talks about the other neighbor's dog ~650' from him and how much it barks.
