Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

EEs & Orps are my favs as well. The orps are for cuddling & giant eggs. The EEs have quirky, fun personalities plus the blue-green eggs. One of our EEs is the recipient of all the "dumb blonde" jokes. She's absolutely beautiful but can't find her way out of the coop some days. Another is fearless! She bullies our 100lb dogs, will take treats from strangers, and chases squirrels. (HATES squirrels!)

EEs are actually mixes rather than a breed, so there's a lot of variety in appearance & egg color. I think the mixing is great for their long-term health & egg production.

I agree! I also think mixes are probably healthier. Which is probably why I just let my broody hatch some mutt eggs. I have a Cuckoo Maran rooster over Buff Orps, Black Australorp, Barred Rock, Delaware, and EE. She just hatched the last chick 7 of 7. I do love the quirky personalities of the EEs, and the fact that I can tell them all apart. Its a little harder with the other breeds!

I will admit it is hard not to go to the feed store right now, since they are getting in some baby chicks and I would love to add more EEs to my flock. I think i will let this batch grow a little and then order some in later, I don't want to give mama more than she can handle since its her first time. That and I want to order a boy or two so I can have some EE roos in my flock when I get rid of my current boy (cant have him breed his offspring later). I had to cull my EE roo this time around because he was being not very nice to my girls, plus I think he was a little mentally off, probably not what I wanted my girls to breed with anyways.

I just noticed Pru is getting some more red on the wings. Common or roo?

The pattern on Pru's back looks pretty even so far, but if you start to notice the feathers coming in on the back of the neck and shoulders looking patchy bright red/orange, it may be a cockerel. I'd like to see a clear close up of her comb in a couple of weeks.
We'd be looking for three rows or a wide comb generally. Still early though. No need to call Pru "Leo" yet...
