It's not the tail feathers you need to worry about. It's the patchy, dark red that is screaming male.

Oh boy...so I guess 3 strikes (comb, patchy red and tail feathers) that means we've got a Scooby not a Daphne. Good thing he's the sweetest thing ever and is actually the chicken I tell my kids to have their friends hold since he's so laid back.

It just means there are no male signs but there are males that look a bit like them... so nobody wants to say for certain they're pullets. I'd like a better shot of the wing on Dark Layer.
