Here he is at 9 weeks. Named him Hamilton (my big buff Orpington roo is general Washington). As soon as I put them in the larger pen with the nice dry wood chip run his cheek poofs fluffed up. Didn’t even realize he had them before! At least not that big. He has these feathers coming in on the back that are thin and literally orange. Not like buff Orpington orange. Much brighter not kidding almost neon. Are these the saddle feathers coming in or too soon for that? You can kind of see them in the third picture. It’s hard to get them in a photo because you need to lift up your they feathers to really see them well. They are in the lower right and look much more orange in person.

Yes, those are the saddle feathers. I always think they look like glass. He's going to be a very handsome rooster. Oh, and the bird is too!

Hi guys, I have 4 chicks at just over 5 weeks old and was wondering if their sex can be determined yet? Pics attached. Also any idea on breeds? They were bought as fertile eggs when one of my Wyandottes went broody from a farmer with a very mixed flock, hoping for at least 1 olive or Easter egger hen

Looks like 2, maybe 3 of them are sporting crests. From the comb my GUESS is that the white one is a cockerel. I THINK the black and whites are pullets and maybe the reddish one as well?

Yes the crests are so funny! Which chicken breeds have crests? The all dark gray one looks like my blue copper Marans hen at that age minus the little crest poof on the head.

The ones I can find are Crested Cream Legbars (they lay blue) and Swedish Flower Hens. More knowledgeable people may have more ideas. I am ignoring breeds like Houdans and Polish, to me their "headdresses" are way beyond a crest.

I’m a novice by anyone’s standards but referring to the sage advice that I’ve received I’d guess they are all pullets. Basing this on comb color/development in comparison to their age and also the color, pattern, and uniformity of their feathering.
