Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I have a predator apron around my entire coop/run setup. But I'm not trying to keep out black snakes. Do you know if they burrow?
I don't know if they burrow, but they are everywhere here. Small as 8 inches and thin enough to get through most standard wire.

I'm assuming you have black rat snakes. Apparently no snake can burrow. I just looked that up. But black rat snakes are exceptional climbers so you'd have to have a tightly covered run to keep them out.
I would think the standard 1/2" hardware cloth would work on the run sides and the predator apron and a solid roof on the run with no holes larger than 1/2". Any snakes small enough to get through that would end of chicken food.

Totally agree with @JedJackson and others about the apron vs. wire on the inside floor. Chickens love to scratch and dig, so my main concern would be them snagging toenails on the wire or cutting their feet, yikes! Plus that could easily cause bumblefoot. Burying the wire deep under the dirt won't necessarily solve the problem. Have you seen wire after a couple years of being in the ground? It's rusty and disintegrating. Not much protection from burrowing predators, and would be really difficult to replace.

Are you looking for blue/green egg layers, or just non-white eggs that would include brown? I'm striving for a colorful egg basket and like keep a mixed flock to try and achieve that. There are too many to list without knowing some other goals... eggs only, possibly meat as well, friendly pets, breeding/showing etc. Best wishes!
