How old are they? It is molting time isn't it?
when it first started I thought good lord what kind of pests do I have now? Went thru all the trouble of cleaning spraying then realized they are 18 months or a little older they are molting . Felt like such a dweeb.

So this group crazy or do you all get together and smoke illegal substances. Grawg ducks stang rabbits sounds odd even to someone as mental as me.
Most people think I am nutty enough without illegal subtances or even the legal ones, after all I raise chickens, along with cats & dogs etc.

but you should join us for a get together stang makes some awesome black bottom cupcakes they are to die for . bairo great at manning a grill.

It is definitely molting time! Most of my girls have passed the naked stage and are at the porcupine state.

Now that I feel like most of the danger has passed, my coworkers think it's time to start picking on me. I made the mistake of telling someone that ILT was caused by a strain of Herpes virus. As if managing to work "Herpes" into every conversation weren't enough... I came into work to find this in my mailbox:

Just a laugh riot, aren't they?

Tennesseeckn - they are a riot, I hope this doesn't mean we'll never see you, we can just make it a point to conduct chicken business away from the picnics..

Yes they seem to be a real "laugh riot"....perhaps they are either not animal people or do not realize chickens count as pets to some of us.

Nah... I guess it's teacher-humor. You know, the laugh-so-you-don't-cry, in-the-trenches type humor? I actually had to laugh... for the first time in a really long time, it seemed.

So sorry to hear about what has happened to you and your girls.
You have ALWAYS had some of the best and healthiest birds around.

Do you have any ideal when they became infected?
Can this spread to other types of birds and animals or is it just limited to chickens?
Can you cross over to grawg's Dark Side or Stang's lucky foot club?

What are you going to do now? I know you did spend a lot of time working on breeding and hatching.
The Chicken community has suffered a great loss along with you.

I am like you, I tried to be as natural as I could get but now I have started second guessing my choices.

Again I am SO Sorry to hear that this has happened.

Thanks,

They are starting to look like nice, health birds again, thankfully.

I suspect wild birds as the cause, but I'll never know for sure.

ILT effects all types of poultry, turkeys, chickens, ducks, even guineas, so no dark side for me, thankfully. (That would indeed be a dark, dark day

) My one attempt at rabbit owning has left me with Jazzy, the vampire bunny. She HATES being held and goes for the jugular with teeth bared when we reach for her, so bunny keeping is not for me.

ILT is supposed to be slow moving, but it hit two of my pens and a total of twelve birds all at once. It's been really calm since they've succombed or recovered. This all happened in, like, eight days.

I am mourning the breeding and hatching most of all. I won't miss showing, since I was never really into it to begin with, but I REALLY hate not being able to share birds with my chicken-buddies. Thankfully there are a lot of people on here that were able to get some of my birds before the sickness struck, so it's not like their genetics won't live on... I'm really going to miss how eggs and chicks offset my feed costs, too.

One of the main reasons I decided to "come out" on here was to make sure my flock stayed well and truly closed. Looking at them today you would never know the damage they could do (unless they became stressed) and it would be really tempting to pretend nothing happened. I'm relying on you guys to keep me honest.

I love that I have a place to vent my sorrow to people who actually appreciate the loss. My other friends and colleagues know that it really upset me, so they sympathize, but they don't really UNDERSTAND, ya know?
