Vaccine is best for us because we have tons of birds. I feed all of them year round. We have tons of house. We even have a bat box. I remember the vet saying my chickens could sustain any disease that was left on the property by other animals. But there hasn't ever been chickens up here so I didn't think twice about it.

We are talking about a solar electric fence. It looks like it would be easy to maintain. Dumb question: I think my chickens are brain damaged - so what's to keep them from getting zapped?

I have some "special" chickens too. We use a solar low impedance electric fence. My chickens seem to do fine with the fence. I only turn it off if I let them out to free range. So far so good at keeping the predators out.

good to know. I grew up on a farm. My dad raised cattle. I remember getting bit by that fence a lot. Bad bad memories. I just had visions of my dum-dum birds sitting on the thing. (bless their hearts)

And advice on where to shop for one? Or just shop around?

I feel like I'm getting into the intermediate range (versus newbie) due to the fact that I was feeling a hens belly yesterday and inspecting for them being egg bound. I would have given up if it hadn't been for you all giving advice and sharing stories. You people rock!

Okay I have been reading about the LT-IVAX vaccine. I will probably confuse myself but after the cloud of confusion passes hopefully clarity will prevail.

I stumbled across the Ameraucana.org site where they were discussing it. They stated to administer the dose via the chickens nostril and not the eye because it can lead to eye infections? Here's the link: http://ameraucana.org/forum/index.php?topic=1780.0 Follow up in treatment in 6 weeks. And yearly thereafter.
Here's another link with more detailed information on the vaccine: http://www.drugs.com/vet/lt-ivax.html

I checked at twin city poultry and its sold in packages of 1000 doses. Does anyone know the shelf life on the vials? I have such a small number of chickens it is not feasible for me to buy such a large quantity. I think I have 20 chickens including the babies. I would also vaccinate my mother-in-laws but that's just 3 chickens.

I will wait to vaccinate all when the chicks get at least 4 weeks old. With my small number of birds 1000 doses would last forever if it did not expire. Also I wonder how many doses per vial?

How many other things do we need/should vaccinate against? Any suggestions?
Littlechicklet....what was the cost of the vaccine??

I'm glad you gave me that link to the Drugs web site. I got confused along the line and thought they couldn't get their first vaccine until they were ten weeks. It's good to know they can get them at four weeks!

The vaccine comes in two bottles. One bottle has a little spongy thing in it that holds the inactive virus. The other bottle holds a blue activator. You have to use it within two hours of mixing it. For twenty-five chickens there's going to be a lot of waste. It says to burn the empty bottles, caps, and unused vaccine.

I'm not big on vaccines, so I'm holding off on giving any others. Honestly, since I only lost four out of fifty birds, I probably would not vaccinate at all if I hadn't seen what a HORRIBLE way it is to die. If I were a little more macho and could cull a sick bird, I might not be vaccinating them at all since the damage is already done and my flock is closed.

If my flock weren't already closed, I would vaccinate for anything that UTK told me was a problem around here AND that causes a carrier-for-life status. BYC has one of the best resources for different poultry diseases I've found: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-injuries-diseases-how-to-diagnose-treat-your-chickens It's in normal people language but has links to other reliable sources, like Merck's, so you can double check the info.

When I talked to the Pathologist (who was furious with me for calling so much) she told me that ILT was her "working diagnosis" as soon as she saw my hen. She told me the other thing she considered was cholera, so maybe that's common in our area, too?

Here's the really ridiculous thing. My hen was clean of the diseases they check for for NPIP. So, even though my Wyandottes have the potential to kill up to 70% of a flock they were introduced to (worst case scenario) I could still be NPIP.

Hey Tennesseeans.... I need some advice/help before I contact my lawyer.... what are the "right to farm" laws here pertaining to new neighbor's running motor toys (4wheelers, dirtbikes, literally lawn mowers with the decks taken off) for 48 hour periods right next to your coop (within 7 feet for sure).... taking only a break to sleep?

My neighbor (who was not here first) has a son he sees every other weekend... he lets this boy burn all the gas in the MidEast all day, everyday he is here (so holidays are worse). My father said he thinks that there is something I can legally do because my egg rate DROPS every other week. And it just so happens that this is my Taj Mahal coop where I breed my most expensive birds (who , again, were there first)

Experience? Suggestions? Any background information on this sort of thing?
