I want to come. Either day. And any place.

Now, chicken pros: I went to feed and water this morning, and one of my golden wyandottes was dead. I freaked out. We got him out and looked him over really good. No blood anywhere. Checked him out. Nothing appears wrong with him. He was fine. He hadn't been acting sick or anything. The other three left in that run/coop look fine and act fine. BUT.....this is the third golden laced wyandotte that has died and they all came from the same person. COINCIDENCE? The other two died before the age of 4 months. He was almost six months old.

Wouldn't you contact the person who sold them to you? These are the only three I've lost. It is getting easier as the other two almost sent me into full-blown depression. But I don't know how to buy chickens now and how do you know if they are carriers, etc.?

Contact him and see if you can trace the origins of the birds. I.E. Did them or the parents come form out of state? If so...where? Check all the others for feather matting around the eyes, nose, and vent. (indicating watery eyes, nose, vent, etc.
I doubt it is just a coincidence. Genetic issue likely....but also there is another problem that could be at play especially this time of year, I'll wait on your answers to the above questions first though before looking at that closer

Ok..so all my eggs are in now after some crazy moments. I have built 4 cooler bators now and have always had really good results. The worst temp swing I have ever had was 1 degree. I had this big stryofoam box from a meat company that is about 2 inches thick and man did I have high hopes for that thing. Long story short, no matter what I did I was getting 4 degree temp swings

After being up nearly all night I finally just crowded the new ones in with my other batch in my favorite cooler-bator...and that one was a walmart special for 18.00 but it holds about a 0.5 degree swing on the temp.

I had 19 eggs already in & due to hatch the 11th. I dropped 22 more from what I just received which should hatch on the morning of the 26th. With this weather, yea there goes the elect. bill.

Hint on the chickens I'm hatching..lets see who is good enough to guess?

I'll need my blue gene breeding chart

I agree with bairo... might be genetics, might not. Gold Laced Wyandottes... hmm... were they "superior" lines? I ask because I have my own opinion on what "superior" means. I had some Wyandottes from great show lines... least hardy things I have ever seen. That's why I ask. No, they weren't gold laced... but I rather not get into specifics because this is a popular chicken site. They were pretty and very good to the standard, but practical. Not at all.
