Stang, question: When we got our male rabbits, they were babies. They took to the litter box easily. The two little does that we just got are making a horrible mess every single day. They just don't get the litter box idea. What can I do? Suggestions?
Some rabbit's just don't get the idea... lol.. how are you going about trying to get them to use it?

I don't know how to even start. My others just picked it up, and I didn't even have to try. I put the newspaper in the littler box, and they went at it. The girls poop everywhere BUT the litter box. And for two little itty bitty does, they sure do poop a lot.

Well, I never brooded around a cat before, but this time I did because this time I used the rabbit's old cage and a reptile heat lamp. ... so all the dangers, like the cat getting the birds or the cat knocking over the lamp... were gone. Well, its backfirering. The birds LOVE the cat. The cat would love to taste the chicks. I think I created a problem. One day these birds will be outside and the cat will still be able to kill them.

I'm watching them now... cat is clawing at the cage and the chicks are pecking her paws like it is a game.

At least they are entertained for now. Wish ya'll could see this. And at night the chicks cry and cry to get under the cat (which isn't going to happen)

My rabbit was halfway trained... once something smells like they go there, though... it's about over for you. I swept up the poo and put it in the litterbox and broke the smell where they went with some pet stain stuff.

Keep in mind, I'm not a rabbit person... but I just treated them like I would a cat or dog. put the smell where I wanted them to go and got the smell away from where they were going wrong.

@ TNBARNQUEEN- I am so sorry to hear about your bad hatch. I had a few that were almost complete losses and it is just gut wrenching. Will be hoping for the little one you were helping to make it and be strong.

Thanks to everyone for the input on the Serama's, I'm just not sure I want anything else to babysit right now- got too many chicks and Juvies to add something else to the mix. Maybe next year I can be a bit better set with coop just for Seramas and a heat source.

Ok, a couple different things I'm going to touch on and make it into one post (hopefully).

Amy - I agree with Stacy (tnchickenut) about the scent stuff... I don't litter train mine but know it's possible.. make sure the pan is big enough for them to start with, the bigger the better, then try to use a small portion of their dirty litter and leave some clean in it.. I'm kinda unsure as to how you've got it set up... but it could be you'll never litter train them, mini rex have their own ideas and if they are does.. some breeds and sexes are harder than others, and then you have to realize all rabbits have their own personalities!

Now, here is what we got accomplished today on the hoop coop for growing the chicks out in... we framed it up and added the fencing wire.

Oh, and I was getting discouraged about my eggs not having done anything yet and I've got a pip! It's barely talking to us though, I'm soo used to the talkative ones! Anyway, it's an orpington egg! YAY!

Hi,
I joined BYC yesterday (long intro posted yesterday on new member thread)

I'm in TN between Dunlap & Fall Creek Falls

I've subscribed to the middle TN thread but can I join this one too? I mean we run our clocks on Eastern time being near Chattanooga ;>

I'm hoping to get in on the NYD hatch a long w/ a homemade bator we are building this wk.
My hens are not laying atm, so I must find some hatching eggs!
I have a poss. option on some Duck eggs but I understand they are more difficult so I think chicken would be safer as a 1st try on new 'bator.

Anyone local-ish to me have fertile chicken eggs available ?

Thanks
FeyRaine

Thank you TNBEAR...I have not had a bad one like this since I first started hatching...the big problem was the detached air sacs. The chicks could not zip but I do have one that hatched. From what I understand the cause was the elongated air sac running down the side of the eggs. The person I bought them from is replacing them. I have Columbians hatching right now. Fingers crossed I may get a SG out of them..I looked for these for a year and was happy to finally find them. I am like you..hatching for the spring. My SG silkie roo is really ticked off about being separated from his hens right now. He will just have to be patient for now while the other roo does his thing. Hopefully I will have a nice breeding stock by spring of SG and reg. silkies. After I hatch these last 9 eggs I will go to test hatching only. My little silkie momma went broody so she is helping out. My incubators are worn out and have got to be serviced..I think I need it too!!
