on a sadder note. Im up early because Harley tried to bust the door down again. He saw something out there. The neighbors dog (who lived btw) now stays inside their house, so it was not him. I went out there to find one of my favorite little hens missing and evidence she had been dragged under the coop and out the front. Something had broke thru the barricade in front, under the coop and into the run to get her. @Nellabean.... it was that pretty little buff cochin cross I got from you. I am very upset about it

Maybe you need a set up where Harley can go busting out the door the moment he wants. Just set off an alarm to wake you or something. But it probably still wouldn't make much of a difference this morning. I'm sorry for the loss of you hen. It seems like it is always our favorites. I know if it was one of my "excess" cockerals I would be upset but not terribly. I think the hens try to hunker down and be quiet, but that doesn't work with a varmit that can smell you and see in the dark.

Maybe set an alarm and let Harley out to patrol at odd times durning the night for the next week or so? Won't bring back the lost hen, but you might catch the culprit.

Sorry for your loss bairo.

My dogs actually do a fair amount of predator/pest control. My aussie got a possum and 2-3 rabbits this year. Though she did start slacking on the bunnies and let them eat some of my garden towards the end of the year. She nearly got a barred owl this year too, she was only 1' short on her leap. And I've seen my dane start barking at vultures if they get too low.

edit. Nearly forgot

yea.. if he was not so spoiled to think he has to sleep next to us to guard us, I would put him out by the coop at night, lol

That is the thing about a GSD. They think that everything within their sight is theirs to guard. (family, other pets, chickens, my socks, the trees, etc)

Anyone see "Muppet Movie"? "Maniacal laugh, MANIACAL LAUGH!"

I always notice in winter, but most things required for chicken keeping are either metal, wet, or both. Fence latches, waterer handles, water hose nozzle... my hands are frozen!!

Sorry to hear that. It's hard to lose some of them. Some just turn into pets

I too lost 2 of my favorites this fall. The puppy I got my kids killed and ate half of my Black Copper Maran hen Prissy and just killed Cookie an Ameraucana. The rooster had a limp for a few days. An aussie/jack russell was a bad idea. She is now gone. The kids want a new puppy but I'm on the fence. If I get a lil dog the coyotes that run thru the yard would have a snack and a big dog can kill my flock.

At least the coop is built like Fort Knox. Only a bear or human can get to them. They can dig under the run wall. The coop is about 3ft off the ground and the hatch is a dead fall type. Hubby built it into the wall and put 40 pounds of rocks in it. It is on a pulley system so my 3 yr old can open it. Just have to make sure no one is standing in the door way when the door drops down

They are only at risk in the day I let them free range. But we have lots of cover from the hawks. It is funny to watch the rooster give the run for cover call. Then the whole time he stands in the middle of the yard crowing his heart out all puffed up. The girls all under bushes, porches or in the pen. All just waiting for LaMar to give the all clear crow. You got to love a good rooster.

Is there anyone here who may have a good quality blue silkie roo they are willing to part with? I am also looking for some White Crested polish pullets or hens to breed to my Crele polish. I don't mind to drive a bit to get them. I do have a White SG roo that is up for trade or sell. He is very personable and breeding age. (Well..he feels he is...still having trouble distinguishing which end is the business end)

I could get hatching eggs but if I am to get my breeding project off the ground I am going to have to find some that are either laying or POL. I do need good quality chickens.

*Bario....so sorry to hear about your little hen. I know it is very heart breaking. Don't know if it would work but is an idea. Giving that animals are always sniffing around to see who has been there...wonder if you let Harley do his business near your pens if it would maybe deter the wild life??

Thanks everyone!!!
Terry
