You may be able to find one someone on CL is giving away from the pet section, there are a few in the knoxville one that are friendly.
Which breeds would you recommend? After buying a few low quality chickens and "straight run" that were all roos (4 week old dominiques) when I started a year ago, I tend not to believe everything sellers tell me, lol.

I've been watching CL for two weeks, haven't seen anything yet winthin my price/driving range. Or the ads seem really fishy. I have a place to keep it out of sight until her b-day, so I have time to find the right one.

Thank you so much for the advice!!

I have a flock of about 35 chickens. When I hatch out eggs or sell them I want to make sure that they are pure and not cross bred. I have Delawares, Lemon Orps, Lavender Orps and EE'S. I let them all free range together, but when I want to get pure bred eggs I have an area to separate them all by breed. My question is how long would I need to keep them separated to insure that I am not selling or hatching out a cross breed chicken? Can the hen stay fertilized from a mating that took place days ago? Mine are not laying or anything yet, but should start within the next few weeks. They are about 15 weeks old. I am most interested in the Lemon Orps and don't want to keep the Lemon Orps together for a couple of days and the eggs I collect still be fertilized by another rooster. Any advice?

First off, if they are not laying yet... you have time. I would chuck the first pullet eggs anyways... they don't hatching well. It's one of those things that the "old timers" all understood but is not in any of the chicken books. First two weeks of eggs are really not good for hatching.

Secondly, the answer to your original question I have heard 2 days, but for the sake of my reputation I always wait 7 days if something happened (Like the other day my LF BR getting on top of my bantam White Wyandotte hen lol). I have never accidentally hatched a cross, and there were times where I only waited 5 days because I was antsy. lol

Wait and talk to NellaBean; she has some pet quality lionheads. I may be driving some to Waynesville NC later this month....

Hey everyone.... I admin a fb page for ETN poultry.... someone is looking for a white faced black spanish rooster.... anyone? If you don't have them, do you know of anyone who does? I told them I would get the "poultry express" on it... so here I am!!

You can either let me know or "like" the group... but I can't say that I WANT you to do that because BYC would get onto me about it and I would get suspended or something stupid. ;)
I sold a pair to a couple near Knoxville who did not like them later cause they where skittish and wanted to sell them.It has been a while but I will check and see. Seems there was someone on here at one time that had some. Will let you now.

@barnqueen, they are super cute and doing well. Megan got mad at me because I put them in the enclosed area for brooding and she says they will be mean because she can not get to them all the time, lol. She loves the colt of course and is trying to convince me we have the room (not)

@tennesseeckn, Thanks so much for the eggs. 6 hatched and two are roosters if the old wives tale for turning them upside down worked ;)

Hannah....didn't you guys do the upside down thing? Or was it the pick them up by the neck one?

AJ...im still trying to keep the roos out of the freezer so I can get that video up. Returned from out of town to find a huge job waiting on me so am still trying to find the time. Wanted this weekend but we have VBS going on. Might still try Saturday if we get back in time

Yes, we did try it and it seemed to work at TSC.

I've been told by many people different types of wives tales, only used a few myself, but for most people I would recommend keeping a log for seeing if such wives tales stay true. I've not been able to do so because I haven't had a way to keep them seperated to see how my "sexing" pays off.

Im going to band the 2 I think are roos out of the 6. We shall see how close it is ;)

speaking of roos

I have the following free: (take before I castrate them and put them in the freezer for dog food)

1 Del. out of Morrow / Braydon hatched jan 28
3 nicely colored EE's hatched end of Feb.
1 baby clean legged Marans
If you go to my coop and then the chicken album...the 3 ee boys are the 5th pic from the last that is titled "EE's love to hang out" they have grown since that pic and the colors are much more vivid now with stunning saddle feathering.

Also; am thinking rabbits are maybe not for me, and since my father in law sold me what he thought were California females (looks like they are California / Angora mixes) 2 whites and a brown. I am going to let them go for $5 apiece. Hannah....if you want the buck back let me know. He has really grown and is still very friendly.
