To TNBarnQueen, I am sorry to call you out. However, you are the first person I have heard of in my general area that has silkies. I was so excited to see this!!! I was wondering if you had any beauties for sale or possibly hatching eggs??? Please forgive me for being so forward. But when I hear about silkies I tend to get a bit over excited.

Sorry for taking so long to get back. I just set silkie eggs in the incubator yesterday and my little black hen just went broody on 8 egg....so...in 21 days hopefully will have some...just keep in touch! Thanks

Welcome to all out newcomers...I am sorry Blessednest and Itsthelaw. Many of us here work and raise chickens and this time of year it is really busy. I mainly run our farm and by the time I am in it is time for dinner and I fall in bed.Throw a show or sale to prepare for in there and It gets frazzled. So...it is not that we are ignoring you....just that life catch up with us. We have a great group here...we even meet periodically for a picnic to just sit and enjoy the company. I cannot beleive I was off here for 3 days and there where 86 new posts!! That can also be a problem at times when there are so many post and the forum moves really quick! Glad to have everyone here.

@Grawg, my name is Amy. Itsthelaw because before I moved to TN, I worked probate in NC. (started out doing real estate closings, but we all know what happened to real estate) I moved to TN in March 2011. Before I could get my occupation to take off here (I was working Patient Access at Blount Memorial), I injured my back, had back surgery and haven't worked since. So the animals have really taken my mind off not being able to do anything, meet anyone or having a real life. - There, that's my llife story.

And to add to your post, I can't eat chicken anymore. Suddenly it dawned on me what chicken was - can't do it.

I lost a guinea this morning. I held him while he died. He had been acting poorly since the last rain when he got wet. I've had him quarantined with a heat lamp. He was 6 weeks old. He must've gotten a respiratory infection. I tried anti-biotics, but I was too late. I'm sad. I had lost a chicken about three weeks ago. I need to step back and not be so invested. It is gut wrenching.

Now, ON A LIGHTER NOTE, who has chickens that are brain-damaged? I have a coop with a run. The run has a roof on 3/4 of it. My chickens are standing in the rain right now. My rooster is soaked head to toe. Dummies. I suppose I'll be trying to heal them in a few days from all the damp rain.

They do it just to mess with us. My silkies will do that. Most of my run is covered but they will find that one little spot...gather up and stand in the rain. I can't tell you how many times I had to put them in cages with a heat lamp to dry out. They look pretty dismal when they have wet crests. Have you ever tried Oxine?? Go to Bario's page and he has all the uses. It is great for resperatory problems. If you watch at shows you will see people walk up to their chickens and spray them in the face. Took me 6 months to find out what they are doing. So...you may want to consider it with all the uses it has. Sorry about you baby. Know to much how it feels.

For those who did not get to come to the sale at TSC....it was great. I was so pleasantly surprised! With it being the first one expected 2 or 3 people to show up with things for sale and some people browse by before going inside, The whole area for sellers was packed and there where more than enough buyers to go around!!! I took 24 chickens and came how with 5. I did very good. Jack and his wife where next to me. Boy.,.,.you should see Jacks net catching skills!!
They are planning on having it every other week...so that is the 1st and 3rd week. I have several people wanting chickens next time I came. Everyone I talked to was happy. Jake, the manager, asked if there was anything else that should be added...I said food for the sellers.....Don't think we will get it.

So...if you can make it the 29th come on and see us...or bring something to sell. They are not charging for spots right now...but when they do it is only $10.

@Bario....sorry I did not get to talk to you much..my "buddy" could talk the hard enough to blow a wind sail. But he was sweet.
And Finally...I have chicken nipples!!!

@Grawg...there where people wanting ducks..if you have any to sell you may want to come join us. I told a couple people about our thread here and how to find you on it. I will take you info with me next time so they will have a direct way to contact you.

That is odd that you mentioned that. Last week I went to the coop to get wormer. I had 4 items written down that were suggested on this site. I got three (wormer, spray for bugs, etc). I had oxine written down, but couldn't find it. Tell me what it looks like.

FYI - one of our TSC has these trade days once a month or so and what they do is have a group, like 4H, Scouts, etc etc. come and sell hotdogs, cokes etc. Just a thought, not sure how they go about settng it up but the one I am talking about (TSC) is the one in Fort Oglethorpe, GA - Battlefield Parkway. Also, they have numerous/different themes for each trade day. For instance, this last weekend they did a Antique Tractor show. They usually have someone that brings horses for kiddy rides for a couple bucks etc. They usually have multiple things going on. I might suggest your TSC manager contact them and or you for additional information/idea.

Do you realize how often I get ignored?

I've been on here nearly a year preaching the power of the duck side and only recently has itsthelaw (really need a nickname or something) shown any hope of converting. I always take a non answer as the answer No.

And while we are on the subject of duck superiority, I think i might prefer the taste of duck over chicken... far more complex and flavorful.

Just the gallon..usually not a need for activator unless you are producing commercial quantities. It is expensive at nearly 40.00 with shipping but should last you at least a couple years.

I have noticed a typo in the Oxine instructions for adding to drinking water. If you are using it for that purpose, please adjust your dilution to 1/8th teaspoon to each gallon of water. This dilution is effective and safe for all animals as their drinking water
