Finally caught up with all the post I've missed out on. Welcome to those who are new to the string.

Until the rain shut me down this weekend, I've been busy with my son finishing up our coop. The small pallet coop has turned into a rather large one :). Lots of creative thinking goes into working with pallet construction I have found out.

Now I'm looking at getting chicks. Is the fall a good time to get them? My kids are so excited about having chicks and keep after me about when they will be ordered, but I want to do what is best for the chicks. We are looking at starting with 10-15, umm I mean 6 yaaaa 6

As for the get together I read about, I would like to be able to say a firm yes but I have just gotten a job and am unsure on what my schedule will be. So if I can I'll be a "crasher".

Have a great day!
We hope you can make it!!!!. I am thinking now with the show up there that maybe sunday is a better day?

Came from Tractor Supply and is Norocillin. Norbrook brand. 300,000 units per ml. We got the 20 gage 1/2 needle. Worked perfect.

We brought in my favorite rooster. He is my baby. I love this chicken more than I love my own dog that has lived with me for the last 8 years. I was so afraid that he was not feeling well. He looks fine. Eyes look good. No runny nose. Feet look fine. No spots on his waddle or comb. But he's been walking around with his head sunk down for 24 hours. Tommy and I waited for him to get on the roost and get settled. Brought him in, put him on the kitchen counter and gave him a shot. He did great. Then, because I love him so much, I got lettuce out of the frig, dipped it in yogart and let him eat on my kitchen counter. The whole time Tommy was shaking his head at me like I'd lost my mind. Just for safe measures we gave him a syringe of water. (fyi: we traded out their waterer yesterday because they had metal waterer and looked rusty. We got a plastic one yesterday in case they weren't drinking. The water gets changed every day, but it always looks rusty. blech)

Bairo, this is me hugging you. You people are the greatest thing ever. I want to do something for you all. Just don't know what yet. Let me think on it.
When I took Plymouth back to the chicken run to put him on his roost, he jumped up on my shoulder instead. He wanted to come back inside I think. I love him. (please note the white spot on his comb. That is yogart. lol)
you already have done something...
You joined our group, and we are happy to have you guys.

OK lets stop the voting and just call it for Sunday the 21st.
How does 1:00 sound to everyone?

@Tigeura
Sorry but you can NOT crash the party.
You can NOT have been invited in order to be able to crash.
Not only were you invited but you ARE expected.

@EVERYONE

This will be the last get together for the year.
To all our newcomers. There is nothing formal about these get together's.
We just get together and have some really good food,
And even better conversations.
We compare stories about what we have dome and what we want to do.
We fuss at bario for not getting the video made this year.
Spouses and better half's have fun telling stories on us.
The kids get to run and have a good time also.
All in all we just have a great time.

So what I am saying, you will have a good time.
We want you there, we want to put a face to the screen names.
If at all possible please try to come.

Did ya'll miss me? I stayed off the internet for the day and enjoyed something they call the real world. Still didn't get out in public but got a bit of fishing in.

video.....oh shoot, lol. i did not have a need for a capon and just forgot with with everything going on. Terry is supposed to pick up a cockeral or two today which are my last ones. I have 40 something eggs in the bator though so i'll use one of those cockerals. Now that it is coming up on winter I'll have a lot more time.

I forgot your other question I was going to answer. Getting chicks this time of the year can be a real challenge. My usual cut off for new hatches is Sept.1st (hatched by date) It's all about really two things, Warmth and draft. You really need to be set up with either an inside (basement ?) brooder and grow out or a decent floor brooder in it's separate area in the coop. Expect your electric bill to go up about 10.00 a month especially if it is outside. If inside it really needs to be set up so they can go to 8 weeks, and then you'll still need a separate thermo-cubed controlled heat source in the coop for those really cold nights.
After the first winter, then I usually don't recommend axillary heat sources at all.

Question about your last post: We don't have electricity run to our coop. What would we do for a heat source?

itsthelaw,
If it's adult birds they don't need heat, just no windy drafts, thicker than summertime litter is helpful as well. If it's chicks, they need temps at 90* from day 1 going down 10* each week. This time of year brooding in a house/basement with a brine sea brooder light, I worry about a power outtage here. I could not keep chicks warm enough in our barn, and with a lamp I would be terrifed of a fire. Spring chicks are suppose to be the strongest hens, according to old timers, I'm trying to avoid raising chicks hatched from Sept. 1st to February. my hubbie finished winterizing the coop this weekend!!! Now he's suppose to erect the outside run...and I have a long awaited working door to the outside!!

Quote: I would probably wait until early spring then and brood them in the house where you have electric.

As far as brooding them in colder weather...my 1st choice would be running electric out the the coop and using a floor brooder (terry has mine, but maybe she can take some pics to show how I designed it)

My second choice would be using an indoor rated vent free propane heater in a dedicated and insulated brooding area. Either the tube type used for spot heating garage areas or something like this (would have to be put into a wire cage so chicks could not get near it) http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-Pro...4&sr=1-5&keywords=indoor+propane+space+heater

Considering the cost of running propane in the winter though for brooding chicks, your probably much better off waiting till spring or running electric.
