I have never done chicks in the Fall. They are 4 weeks now so they will need heat for a while yet. I am cutting it by 5 degrees each week. With the temps falling when will they be able to do without the heat lamp? week 1-95, 2-90, 3-85, 4-80, 5-75, 6-70, 7-65, 8-60, 9-55...would I just keep counting down and keep them cooped with the heat lamp? I hate to think of them being inside until Spring!

As far as my waterers go I have 1 of the electric heating pans you sit the waterer on. Last year my metal one went bad & I was too cheap to buy one so I put a plastic pan on it & it worked all Winter. I may invest in another electric heater for the second pen.
I cut mine off the heat lamps when its warm enough they're not huddling, and then turn on during the night, it got them feathered out real fast and they were ready by 5 weeks I was able to put them in the run by themselves... I worried with the cold rains but they seem to be doing fine.

ETA: they are 7-8 weeks I think... will have to look...

Chicks are on their own when they get feathered and about a pound in weight here... no matter what the weather. The cold stunts growth as they put energy into staying warm verses growing, that is why it is not the best for large fowl... bantams you want small, so it can be a trick you do to get smaller birds if you want to show.

As for the waterer... electric would be awesome. However, this year I have 17 waterers.... which is about half of what I used to have. So I can't afford electric for everyone. Something that would be very different if I get to start fresh somewhere else.

Sorry! LOL, I guess it caught me off guard, it's one thing for the water for the chickens... I usually overlook those kind of things, but when I saw the rabbit kinda ****** me off.. Now as far as "inbreeding" goes, the best show rabbits are from what we call LINE breeding... which in my opinion IS inbreeding, but it does bring out the best features of your lines usually... and I will be doing it, because breeding different lines even if they are both nice rabbits can create some of the worst looking rabbits... I've known breeders to have to cull the whole litter from breeding new lines in because sometimes they don't mix well.
Same with chickens... but yes, that rabbit has be rabid (see, I can joke anytime)... seriously. What the........!??!

Yup that is the rabbits home.... look at the poo. OMG!!! YA'LL GOT ME FIRED UP!!! Where is the number to report this sh** again!?!

I often wonder how much good it does to call Animal Control

The truly sad part is MANY people think this is normal & acceptable treatment.

The sad part is if you buy the animals, he's just going to get more... if he thinks he can make money from treating them this way... he'll not stop.

Stanglover, where can I find a vet to "fix" my two male rabbits? I don't plan on breeding, and they are about six months old. They began fighting last week. One has a torn lip and the other has four scabs on his back. It is time to nip, but I don't know where to go.

Everyone, (and at any point I ask too many questions and you want me to take a breat, just say "Amy, don't come on here for three days.") I started the shots today for everyone except my rooster who got his yesterday. I will do every other day (monday, wednesday and friday) as Bairo said. Now my question is this: I have the ILT vaccine. We were going to start it the day my golden wyandotte rooster died. How long after everyone getting their shots can I give the ILT vaccine? I have it in the frig and haven't mixed it so it is safe to wait as long as I need.

I don't know those people you speak of... if I did, they would wish I didn't know them. In no world is it ok to keep a animal in a cage that it's nose touches the walls no matter what. And there is no food or water in that tiny dish. (and it's not a lionhead, but that is neither here nor there but shows they know NOTHING).

BTW I showed my brother who a rabbit guy... now he is fired up. It's spreading!

I wouldn't BUY them. My brother is already trying to figure out if he can talk the guy into giving it up. He is much more diplomatic than I... I'm the strong arm type, he is the "stroke their ego then subliminally get them to see they are wrong" type.

Those people are like the person who has the ad. He is not the first I have seen with animals in filthy tiny cages. I would say he is treating them like Veal but that is wrong because I am sure Veal are in clean conditions & have access to fresh food & water. I just meant I have seen it before; unfortunately, many times.
