Change of subject... I guess I won't be hatching any eggs this fall!

Oh well! I wish I could have a pretty day to clean the coop before it gets really cold!

Why not!?! I am... I ended up ordering some Olandsk Dwarf eggs to put under that broody. I would have made out cheaper with bairo's offer... but no offense bairo... I'm super excited to get these!!!

Chicks are on their own when they get feathered and about a pound in weight here... no matter what the weather. The cold stunts growth as they put energy into staying warm verses growing, that is why it is not the best for large fowl... bantams you want small, so it can be a trick you do to get smaller birds if you want to show.

As for the waterer... electric would be awesome. However, this year I have 17 waterers.... which is about half of what I used to have. So I can't afford electric for everyone. Something that would be very different if I get to start fresh somewhere else.

I cut mine off the heat lamps when its warm enough they're not huddling, and then turn on during the night, it got them feathered out real fast and they were ready by 5 weeks I was able to put them in the run by themselves... I worried with the cold rains but they seem to be doing fine.

ETA: they are 7-8 weeks I think... will have to look...

Thanks for the information. These chicks are feathering out quickly. I hope we can get the coop done in the next couple of weeks. I accidentally tossed my temp gauge out with the last litter change

So until I get to Lowe's to pick up another one I am playing it by how they are acting. I tend to keep my house very cool (65-68) so they still need heat in the brooder.

BTW...I did not mean to imply I thought the CL was acceptable. I am an animal lover & many animals I see do not meet my basic standard of care views. I beat myself up because my dogs do not have the whole yard fenced to run loose in when they are outside, I have fallen short on their obedience training, etc and my cat is obese.

Remember, he is in mid-moult... she is just about done with hers. You can BARELY see her shine... there is green sheen on her hackle. He has blue sheen over all his black. This is my standard on breeding these. terracotta eggs, white ear lobes, EXTREMELY "range smart" (because I have a pet peeve when people say "rangers"... any chicken will range. The question is, will they be smart enough to not get eatten while they are out there?)

And next we have my dirty coop.... lol. You can see her sheen a bit better is why I wanted to post this one. (well, I could at full size at least)

And here is a better shot of that shine.... LOVE the way they sparkle in the sun. All these Euro birds imported and I love those two the most. Can't wait to get back into the project full swing. Had a bit of a re-group period. Look at that mahogony shoulder against that blue sheen... You love it? I do!

And below is a Shiner sport... Not my goal, but she is pretty. makes me wonder if I should try for them more often. Thoughts? She lays dark eggs too... notice the white earlobe? (and the tractor she is in was moved after this picture, btw... hard relying on other's to do your hard work) That is a XW line BR next to her.... AVAILABLE (the rooster BR... not the sport)

Well, I couldn't find a breed I wanted... and finding a bantam breed would be tough... I wouldn't mind bantam cochins or d'uccles.. but I'm not sure where I'd find any...

I didn't think you thought it was ok... lol. BYC people are the best for critter care... that is why I start by asking you guys and gals if you want my chickens first.... and often give them away for alot less to BYCers just to know they are getting a good home. ;)

I had bantam cochins... sold the whole flock to another BYCer... I can't remember their name but they are in middle TN... I liked them alright. Good personalities. I have some LF Cochins... sweet birds.

I don't have them for breeding... sorry!! They are just pet girls. I got them from hatchery in a mixed layer "grab bag". I have partridge and blue. The bantams I did have were red. I recommend them to people who want friendly birds that are just a bit different.
