Maybe in the Spring I will give it a try if you all promise to help me! I have some things in mind I want to do. I believe everyone has project birds and I want something that does not exist.

I guess I could start with my EE eggs & see how I do. They will be free & I will loose nothing but time. What is a good incubator that is idiot proof?

AWESOME!!! You gonna keep it a chicken secret until you get it going? I understand. I used to say what I was wanting to do on BYC and people with more money and time than me would steal the idea . LITERALLY. So now I keep "chicken secrets" until I got it going. Shame you have to be like that... but crud, man, it sucks when you have a awesome idea and someone does that.

Any of the Advanced models will do... I love my brinsea mini advanced... it only holds 7-10 eggs (10 if you hand turn, 7 if you let them go automatically) and you just keep the water level at the recommended amount and viola!

How funny I was just looking at the Brinsea 20. I wish I had diehard broody hens but I don't. I just about wet my pants when I had 2 go broody this past Spring. It was my first ever broody hens & both sisters at the same time.

I forgot your other question I was going to answer. Getting chicks this time of the year can be a real challenge. My usual cut off for new hatches is Sept.1st (hatched by date) It's all about really two things, Warmth and draft. You really need to be set up with either an inside (basement ?) brooder and grow out or a decent floor brooder in it's separate area in the coop. Expect your electric bill to go up about 10.00 a month especially if it is outside. If inside it really needs to be set up so they can go to 8 weeks, and then you'll still need a separate thermo-cubed controlled heat source in the coop for those really cold nights.
After the first winter, then I usually don't recommend axillary heat sources at all.

I will post some pics of a brooder I have of Barios. Also...aside from being the queen of staggered hatching ( currently have eggs hatching every other day for the next 3 weeks) I have done a lot of hatching during the winter. Bario is right..drafts and warmth. I use a large rabbit cage you can buy at a pet store. I know they are expensive but well worth the investment if you are going to do chicks in the winter. You can also use a huge sized rubbermaid tub but the chicks are not as spastic if they can see out a bit. You can put the light on it and I take towels and clothes pins putting them all around the cage. I use a bedroom we are getting ready to redo...someday. If you are lucky enough I know a lady who uses a 125 gal aquarium! I sure wish I had not sold mine. When they are old enough and have enough healthy weight you can move them out and use a brooder like Barios. It has a place for a bulb underneath so they can snuggle up to stay warm and put shavings on the top part to hold the heat in. I do keep mine in til around 10 weeks...depending on the breed. but be ready to do a lot of dusting.
