I will post some pics of a brooder I have of Barios. Also...aside from being the queen of staggered hatching ( currently have eggs hatching every other day for the next 3 weeks) I have done a lot of hatching during the winter. Bario is right..drafts and warmth. I use a large rabbit cage you can buy at a pet store. I know they are expensive but well worth the investment if you are going to do chicks in the winter. You can also use a huge sized rubbermaid tub but the chicks are not as spastic if they can see out a bit. You can put the light on it and I take towels and clothes pins putting them all around the cage. I use a bedroom we are getting ready to redo...someday. If you are lucky enough I know a lady who uses a 125 gal aquarium! I sure wish I had not sold mine. When they are old enough and have enough healthy weight you can move them out and use a brooder like Barios. It has a place for a bulb underneath so they can snuggle up to stay warm and put shavings on the top part to hold the heat in. I do keep mine in til around 10 weeks...depending on the breed. but be ready to do a lot of dusting.

.Some are hardier than others. Hope this helps!

I am allergic to dust but have brooded several in my laundry room. I can usually stand it the first 4 weeks then I start getting frantic wanting them out of the house.

Well, I couldn't find a breed I wanted... and finding a bantam breed would be tough... I wouldn't mind bantam cochins or d'uccles.. but I'm not sure where I'd find any...
Stang...I got ya covered on the D'Uccles! I just hatched out 2 F3 lavenders. Here are a couple pics of mine.

And you have seen this guy

I am getting ready to boot this one before he breaks off his leg feathering. I know he is not an acceptable color for show but gonna do it anyway.

You would love them because they fit your personality Stang...just sweet and gentle. They are very personable and very big pets. With their size some people even keep them in their homes like parrots. And they are real talkers too.

I am going to keep it a "chicken secret" and hope I can find the space & $ to get it going. You & stang are bad influences

.glad to have found everyone....Its nice
Actually I have had the idea for a long time but did not know where to start.

Well let us know if we can help... if you can... lol

Pretty Chickens!

And ya'll might want to buy those expensive incubators... I use still air Hovabators.... not Little Giant (they are CRAP!).... maybe it's just me. Apparently I like a challenge. Shipped (often expensive) eggs in a $45 Hovabator.

Naw..he is a pretty nice guy and works hard to make this forum great....be warned though. If you are not on here at least every other day plan on spending a little time catching up...I am cross-eyed from catching up on 5 days worth. But it just means we have some great members who like to socialize with us.

Does anyone have a HovaBator Genesis 1588 I am wanting to get that incubator for chicken eggs along with the turner that goes with it. I wanted to know if you like it and if you get good hatches with it or not and what temp and humidity do you set yours at...I am thinking I would set humidity to 35-45% and temp. to 99.5 for the first 18 days, then on lockdown up the humidity to 55-60%
