eating eggs in nest

When my hens break an egg they eat it all fighting for the eggshell too. It seems that you do have intruders .

 

Jays, opossums, raccoons, dogs, and skunks will leave empty shells near the nest.

 

When I was a kid, we had a bad problem with the hens eating the eggs. More or less, they would lay the egg, then turn around and break it open. They'd 'drink' the egg, then eat the shell, with almost no evidence left over. I've heard it's a very hard habit to break, but there's threads on here I think that explain how to cure it.
