I'm thrilled, and scared. I recently lost my oldest of 5 ducks to a predator, and the youngest girl turned out to be a draklet. Leaving me with 2 drakes and 2 hens. Long story short, I ordered eggs from Ebay.
12 eggs that might give me , lavender, silver, blue, chocolate and a color I have never heard of, mid-purple. I will be over the moon if I get 2 females from this hatch.
The eggs came beautifully packed, with no broken shells. They also included 4 extra! Most of the air cells were wobbly, some were rock solid and a few looked really iffy.
On the 31st I put them under my broody muscovy. She had a nest of 12 she was building. I removed most of her eggs and replaced them with the shipped ones. I hoped the extra number would push her into fulltime sitting. It took two days I would say before she was full pancake, down feather lined and parked on them for the long haul.
At one week I snuck out and candled the eggs. All of shipped eggs were fertile and developing! She also had four of her own eggs that I didnt have a chance to check.
Today is the 19th and I just ran out there this morning when she was bathing and candled them again. It was pretty light, but I could just make out aircells and even a few veins. All 16 shipped seem to be alive. one of the eggs was stained pretty badly with blue berry poo or juice. The stains have absorbed into the egg shell and it looks scary and I can only see some of the air cell. I tried smelling it, and it smells like duck butt, like all the others. She walked through a blueberry mess on they way back to her nest one day and a number of the eggs are sporting some purple spots. I assume this would happen in nature and decided to leave them alone. Of the 4 that were hers, one was removed today, infertile and with two drakes, go figure. 6 of the shipped egg aircells are good, no wobbles.
This will be my first hatch of shipped eggs. Have I made any mistakes do you think? I'm worried about letting the eggs sit one day in the house and than the two they spent in the nest before she went full time broody. When do you think the hatch day will be? Should I remove the badly stained egg? Is there anything I can do at this time to help the still moving aircell eggs?
I'll post some pictures when my son wakes up and shows me how to make the pictures from my phone show up on the computer faster.

The egg I'm worried about is the one on the left side. It also had the worst air cell.

Ok, that dark egg was rotten. Brought it in to candle and my daughter was walking by, whats that smell?! In the very dark bathroom, there was an air cell but it kinda oozed around. We put the egg in a plastic bag, I was still worried about killing a chick, but when it was broken open,as she put it, just cheese stuff. So gross. It's getting so hot here in So. Cal. My duck is spending much of the time just standing over the eggs. ugh ugh not good.

I think you should be fine. Broody ducks are the best for shipped eggs. In the same boat my self. Mine are due in a week. Had a 100% hatch last year on shipped eggs under my muscovy duck. They should hatch 35 days after she became a dedicated broody.

I went out to check the eggs today. It's 99 degrees out and the mom was off the eggs standing on guard just off to the side. I grabbed two and was struck by how hot they felt. Like when your child has a fever and you know immediately. I brought them in and could still see movement, but I'm worried about them cooking. I'm not sure if this was ok but I misted them with water.
I had quail eggs this morning that were actually soft boiled in the shell, threw a bunch out. I will start collecting them early at dawn and through out the day. I know Muscovies are great moms and from the tropics. Tell me if the misting was a mistake. GAH!

It sounds like you hen knows exactly what she is doing! I just hope you don't end up with drakes! Lol!

Thanks, I'm going to try to do the vent sexing thing. Again. I was very careful with Maggie(Magnolia). The spiral penis did not make an appearance. I don't want to hurt a duck, but what happens if your.... too rough? They die? They are sterile? They prolapse? Lord knows I don't want to ever hurt a duckling, ever! In trying to vent sex, is there a point of errrr, no return? I have watched videos and have read tutorials, I just don't seem to have the knack? Am I being too tentative?
Not to be a drama queen but, some of the air cells seem very large,as in 50-60% of the egg.
Tonight, I went out there and candled a few, not all. I saw an internal pip. Um, Yesss!!
Hatching is so stressful. I thought I would be so different, I mean after all the post I have read, I'm almost an expert right? No.
I end up worring, and stressing over everything. Last night I was posting in my sleep. Really.
Thank you for all the reassuringing posts, there are so many calm and positive posters on this site. It's wonderful to have a sounding board for all of this. Thank You.

If her nest is in the shade the eggs should be fine. :D

I could hear clicking from 12 of the eggs. Two even cheeped! Yes the nest is in a 4x4 dog kennel with a tarp roof, with two side wrapped in shade cloth. The whole thing is in the shade from trees most of the day.

She still lets her baby Maggie lay by her. That might change when the chicks come.
