My chicken Ebony recently started laying! She has well surpassed my expectations.....she is a silkie x Sebright (I think) and they aren't known for laying well....let alone it being the middle of winter, and this is her first week or two of laying! She laid her first egg on the 15th.... I wasn't eggspecting (oof) an egg because she laid one only a bit over 24 hours ago.....
I was feeding the chickens some scratch when I realized Eb was acting strange, standing by the coop and clucking. She stared at me, and then I realized that I had forgotten to open the coop! I lifted her in and she chose a box... she made a little nest ( I have a little circle of strips of wood, a bit like hay, and then hemp bedding at the bottom...) and the sat down. I patted her gently while she got ready to lay. She was panting so I assume it hurts a bit. Then after about 5 minutes, she stood up. 30 seconds go by, and then.... *pop*. A steaming hot egg, right into my hand! I was so proud! She sat there for a minute, then went outside to get a drink and a snack. I think that she was actually ready to find a nest for a while before, but she got more desperate right before, and that's why she asked me to open the coop. She is very shy, and while she will tolerate cuddles and will eat out o my had, she runs away if I try to pat her.
Has anyone had this before?
